Abstract

Dengue fever has always been a problem to everyone and it is not advisable to always use pesticide to control the mosquito-causing dengue since it will cause harm to one’s health and our environment. So this study was conducted to determine was conducted to determine the effect of aromatic plants namely pandan and lemon grass as water-based crude extracts on the normal larval (wriggler) development of pest, Aedes aegypti to reach full pupae or adult stage.

Different treatments were prepared as to Treatment A (Lemon Grass), Treatment B (Pandan), and Treatment C (Water) with three trials each. Each trial has 10 wrigglers in it. Observation and data collection were done every 24 hours for about week. The data that has been gathered were analyzed using statistical tools: Kruskal Wallis Test.

The test revealed that both pandan and lemongrass water extracts inflict damage to mosquito wrigglers that can result to 67% mortality of the wrigglers in just about four days after treatment.

The experiment showed that weed killers have a negative effect on the growth and health of plants. The growth and health of plants treated with weed killer when placed in different settings—under the shade and under direct sunlight—were greatly affected. The temperature, humidity, rain, and wind all affected how well the weed killer worked on the plants experimented. Though the plants were treated with weed killer once and watered with tap water after the treatment, the weed killer left residue on the plants that caused stagnant growth. The higher the concentration of weed killer treated on the plants, the greater the effect the weed killers have on the health and growth of plants. With this, it means that crops treated with weed killers in…

Over the years, insects greatly contribute much with ecological balance in nature yet it also dramatically causes economic problems like the loss of production the crops due to the damage that they made and the cost of the attempt to prevent or control the problem. The study was done to find out if oil from betel leaf can treat cutaneous or wound infection caused by Chrysomya megacephala(oriental latrine fly). This fly species is also found in PNG. The experiments were set up to treat larvae of the fly with oil extracted from daga leaf. The result was the oil from daga leaf was toxic to oriental latrine fly larvae. Concentrations of 4-3% of daga leaf oil killed all the larvae exposed (100%) after exposure to 3 1/2 hours. The researchers concluded that oil from daga leaf has medicinal properties which can be further developed. The study was done in Sri Lanka.…

The first truly effective active ingredient used in mosquito repellents was citronella oil. This material is an herbal extract derived from the citronella plant, an Asian grass. While citronella had been used for centuries for medicinal purposes, its repellence was only accidentally discovered in 1901, when it was used as a hairdressing fragrance. Since citronella oil is a fragrant material, it is thought that the chemical terpenes of which it is composed are responsible for its repellent activity. Citronella oil does repel mosquitos, but it has certain characteristics which limit its effectiveness. For example, it is very volatile and evaporates too quickly from surfaces to which it is applied. Also, large amounts are needed to be effective.…

Abstract. Mosquitoes have pestered land and vertebrates for millions of years. Commercial insecticides available today, however, are not environment-friendly and may be expensive. This Study aimed to develop an environment-friendly, safe, effective, and cheap mosquito repellant. Pinus insularis (pine cones) and Salix babylonica (weeping willow) leaves were gathered from different places. A solution was extracted, collected and distilled to separate the extract from the solvent. A mixture with rations of 1:1.5 and 1:25 weeping willow leaves and pine cone extracts prepared. The mixture was then tested on wrigglers and adult mosquitoes. The chi-square test was used to determine if there was an association between the death of the wrigglers and mosquitoes and the presence of the repellant. The statistical test showed that the prepared mosquito repellant was not effective.…

Essential oils and extracts belonging to plants in the citronella genus (Poaceae) are commonly used as ingredients of plant-based mosquito repellents (Table (Table1),1), mainlyCymbopogon nardus that is sold in Europe and North America in commercial preparations. Citronella has found its way into many commercial preparations through its familiarity, rather than its efficacy. Citronella was originally extracted for use in perfumery, and its name derives from the French citronelle around 1858 [28]. It was used by the Indian Army to repel mosquitoes at the beginning of the 20thcentury [29] and was then registered for commercial use in the USA in 1948 [30]. Today, citronella is one of the most widely used natural repellents on the market, used at concentrations of 5-10%. This is lower than most other commercial repellents but higher concentrations can cause skin sensitivity. However, there are relatively few studies that have been carried out to determine the efficacy of essential oils from citronella as arthropod repellents. Citronella-based repellents…
