The textbook definition of self-serving bias (www.psychologytoday.com) is when people tend to attribute positive events to their own character, but they attribute negative events to external factors, so quite literally, self-serving bias is making oneself look good and blaming other factors. In Book 2 of the Aeneid, Virgil recounts the Battle of Troy from the Roman perspective while in Books 3 and 4 of the Odyssey and in the Iliad, Homer recounts the battle from the Greek perspective. Both epics tell the story of the Greeks construction of the Trojan Horse, which is a wooden horse secretly hiding the army in its hollow gut. The Greeks…
The adventures continue. In the beginning of this book, Odysseus returns to Aeaea and buries his friend, Elpenor, like he so persistently requested. He also returns in order to spend one last night with his sporadic lover, Circe. Throughout his visit, she informs him of the difficult challenges coming his way in his trip back home as well as how to paramount them. Setting sail, he shares her advice with his crewmates. Arriving at the home of the Sirens, flying creatures whose sweet songs would tantalize sailors onto rocks, Odysseus plugs everyone’s ears with beeswax as they bind him to the ship. This is exactly how Circe recommend their approach to be. While they sing their songs about how they can reveal the future, under their influence,…
It is very important for the people of the ancient world to practice hospitality. In the Odyssey, Athena, disguising herself as a seafaring man, appears at Odysseus’ palace. She is ignored at the front door by the suitors of Penelope. Later, Odysseus’ son, Telemachus, apologizes to her for the suitors’ lack of hospitality. He invites her to have a meal. In return, Athena offers the young prince a piece of good advice that he should go abroad in order to seek his father’s whereabouts. In this case, the host and the guest establish a mutually helpful and respectful relationship that ensures their safety and the society’s stability.…
In The Odyssey the reader learns about what the Greek people valued by learning that they valued hospitality no matter who you are, and lineage. The story shows the reader that if someone is found in a situation in which they do not know someone, the host should be hospitable and help the stranger with what he or she needs. Also, the idea that where someone comes from, who their father is , and who is their family is determines how they should act and what they are like. The Odyssey Shows many examples of these ideas in the text, by making the characters experience these situations.…

Trust is the one of the most important aspects of our daily life, and we all know how much we need solid friendships to thrive. It is for that reasons that friendship and trust are the themes that were singled out in the pieces of literature that we have read over the course of the year. The Odyssey shows not quite genuine friendship, but it shows a great example of general friendship and trust. To Kill A Mockingbird had multiple relationships and interactions including the following; Jem and Scout, Scout and Dill, Scout and Boo Radley, and that sense of trust and well being between Atticus and Tom Robinson. Romeo and Juliet is sort of a given as an example of this theme but it adds even more to the equation, it adds love. Lastly, 12 Angry Men showed a lot of trust. In the way that the young boy must trust the Jurors to judge fairly, and how all of the other jurors must trust Juror 8's theories of innocence for the defendant. Although these four stories share different types of friendship and trust it is still just as important of a theme in all of them.…

In our modern day, there are plenty of different ways that a person can show hospitality towards a guest whether it be a stranger or friend. Having only lived in the United States, I have found myself to be treated most graciously by my friends, but every so often, I do find myself to be lost in a friends house. Every person was taught certain morals as a child that they now use in their adult lives, but for some people, hospitality has been thought to be just letting them come into the house. In the Odyssey, so far, we as the readers have come to see how hospitality can be very well done. Whether it be Telemachus or Odysseus traveling and staying at places, they were served at the finest level even though they were complete strangers.…
When humans first come into this vast world, they're merely gray clay. Although they never remain the same shape or color for long; easily melded with every encounter, sculpted into works of art with every push and pull of daily life. As they are crafted into individuals, their heart is worn on their sleeve, as their ordeals chisel their talents and character. They will gain color through their actions and when their time is up, who they are is sculpted into every curve, edge, and color of them. Horace was one of the many few who saw the clay and the diversity between every individual. The main cause for this wide diversity is adversity; adversity has a way of fabricating character and talents into every person. Through every anguish, our clay…

Ancient Greeks had a poor and dark view on what happened to them once they died. They did not have a place where they their souls went to rest in peace. Instead, they went to where they were tortured for the rest of their immortal lives. This is shown in both epics, The Odyssey by Homer and The Aeneid by Virgil. In the Odyssey Odysseus into the underworld and you get his count on the awfulness of Hades, and too Aeneas goes to the underworld and you see the different parts and find out the meaning of each section. Both texts have similarities and differences on the interpretations of the after lives of greeks. Throughout time Greeks have changed their understandings of…
In this passage of Demodocus' Song from Book VIII of The Odyssey , “A Day for Songs and Contests”, Homer creates a contrasting effect in presenting the nature of Odysseus between the two paragraphs, one conveys strength and power, while the expresses melancholy and mourning. This is shown though the usage of diction and imagery.…
As shown in my final products, my ability to convey a message through my writing has gotten stronger. My persuasive essay, for example, was able to convince those with opposing views by using information and inferencing how it would affect everyone in a negative manner. Also, in my cultural identity essay I was able to effectively describe and define my culture and how the combination of my parents’ distinctive cultures became a unique one entirely. Previously in my writing I do not think I was able to efficiently convey a message to my audience like I do after this…
