Effectiveness of Eucalyptus Leaves as an Alternative Mosquito Candle
ABSTRACT

Philippines is experiencing an erratic change in weather which is causing a lot of problems, including the increase of population growth of mosquitoes which could cause various kinds of diseases like Encephalitis, West Nile Fever, Dengue Fever and Malaria. People should be aware of the things that might happen because of the said diseases. The researcher conducted a study that could be a possible solution to this kind of problem.

The main purpose of the study is to make a candle out of natural ingredients commonly found at our surroundings which is safe for humans as well as for the environment. At the end, it was proven that the product, the mosquito candle made out of Eucalyptus leaves is effective. It may help our country to lessen the dengue cases here in the Philippines.

The researcher hereby recommended to make further experimentation about the use of Eucalyptus Leaves. Design or make gadget that could improve the process. Make an ointment that could prevent different illness for the improvement of this study.

CHAPTER 1 This chapter includes the problem of the study and its background, its purpose and significance, hypothesis, scope and limitations and definition of terms.
A. Background of the Study
Philippines is now facing unpredictable weather conditions which could cause a lot of problems including population growth of mosquitoes that could lead people to different kinds of diseases such as malaria an dengue. People tend to use some sort of repellant just to get rid of them. The researches thought of a way on how to to minimize the cases of the said pests and at the same time lessen the expenses needed for these type of illness. Especially as of now, the country is suffering from poverty.
Now a days, people are getting much confused over the circumstances in our society where mosquitoes are one of the risk of increasing dengue cases. The researches thought of the way on how to create a

The use of pesticides is an important decision that thousands of communities face each year. Nobody likes dealing with mosquitos and the diseases they bring so using chemicals and pesticides is an option but with other consequences. Mosquitos carry West Nile Virus that affects the city of Genericville every year with 50 cases projected this year in the city and two fatalities as well. On the other hand, the chemicals proposed for controlling the mosquito population has its own risks. The pesticide Malathion is also dangerous to people if they come in contact with it before it degrades. The potential for citizens of the city being exposed is almost a certainty with many short and long-term risks being unknown. In this risk assessment I will weigh the consequences of each approach being the use of Malathion on the mosquitos and wetlands or not and battle the mosquitos and West Nile Virus. This assessment will include Hazard identification, dose-response, exposure, and risk characterization.…

Mosquito traps are really useful nowadays. Why? Well, obviously, mosquitoes are really irritating and may cause deadly disease; example dengue. So the main purpose of our Investigatory Project is to at least lessen the widespread mosquito procreation. Our Investigatory Project is very easy to make and very affordable. The things that are needed in this project can be seen inside our own dwelling place.…

Mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever, have plagued civilization for thousands of years. There are many kind of mosquitoes, each of which has a different habitat, behavior and preferred source of blood. About ten of these species are so numerous, and such vicious biters of man and animals, that an organized mosquito control is necessary because mosquitoes are not a nuisance as biting insects, but are also involved periodically in transmitting disease to humans and animals.…

The spread of dengue is attributed to expanding geographic distribution of the four dengue viruses and their mosquito vectors, the most important of which is the predominantly urban species Aedes aegypti. A rapid rise in urban mosquito populations is bringing ever greater numbers of people into contact with this vector, especially in areas that are favourable for mosquito breeding, e.g. where household water storage is common and where solid waste disposal services are inadequate.…

    * Multiple strategies against malaria are needed because there are numerous species of vectors and four species ofPlasmodium. * Some populations of Plasmodium, especially Plasmodium falciparum, are resistant to drugs, so alternative drugs need to be used. * Research needs to be done on new drugs as a "reserve weapon" for future cases of drug resistance. Unfortunately, drug resistance is more common in malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the most dangerous type of malaria, than in the other three species. * Some populations of mosquitoes have developed resistance to certain insecticides. This resistance may be of varying degrees. It is important that alternative insecticides be available for breaking human-vector contact. * Dwellings are constructed differently in different parts of the world, and thus different strategies may be appropriate in different places. Please Name Some Specific Strategies for Malaria Control: * Screening:Screening of Dwellings to Prevent Malaria Mosquitoes from Entering and Biting the People Inside. Screening is a positive development measure. Screening of buildings also improves people's lives in other ways i.e. keeping flies out of homes and cafes. Where it is possible [i.e. buildings have four walls] to put screens on windows and screen doors on doors, screening should be encouraged. Screening is also a useful adjunct to use of a treated bednet or residual treatment of walls because it reduces the number of malaria mosquitoes entering and leaving the building and increases the odds that Anopheles mosquitoes that get into the building will be exposed to the treated bednet or residual treatment. * Source reduction: This is possible in some conditions but very difficult in other conditions. Malaria mosquitoes breed in many different locations. Source reduction is particularly useful if mosquitoes are breeding in man-made containers such as water tanks or at…

    I. ABSTRACT: We the researcher conduct this study due to economic crisis now a days. Its aim to create a product of insect repellent which is cheaper and could give the same quality which the commercial one could give through lemon grass. Insect repellent are important tools for prevention of insect borne - diseases as well as painful or uncomfortable insect bites. And one natural insect repellent is the lemon grass (Cymbopogon Citratus). Determining the effectiveness of lemon grass as insect repellent is the main goal of the study. Specifically, it intends to apply the Steam Distillation Technique in obtaining the natural elements and essential oil of lemon grass such as citral and citronella. Lemon grass is a native herb from temperate and warm regions such as India, is widely used in Asian cooking and is an ingredient in many Thai and Vietnamese foods. Lemon grass use in cooking has become popular in the Caribbean and in the united states for its aromatic citrus flavor with a trace of garlic. Lemon grass is a member of specie of grass that grows to as high as 1 meter with leaves of 1 to 1.5 centimeters in width that grows from a stalk of about 30 to 80 cm long with bulbous lower end.…

Before applying any approach to control the dengue vectors, it is important to understand the biology (discussed in the section of “Biology of vector mosquitoes) and life cycle of Aedes mosquitoes which enables us to understand their population dynamics and their existence in nature. Life table parameters of St. aegypti provides base-line information on the potential for colonization in the laboratory, dengue transmission and control measures (Afrane, et al., 2007; Tejerina, et al., 2009) and provides reproductive strategies of St. aegypti (Christophers, 1960; Crovello, & Hacker, 1972). The various life history characteristics of mosquito includes female gonotrophic cycle, fecundity, egg hatching, stage-specific mortality, adult emergence…

Many attempts have been made to produce an insect repellent from Lanzones peelings. Lanzones peelings are the main ingredient for our study. The group chose it because according to research, the skin of lanzones has a certain compound that can repel mosquitos. When burned, it also produces an aromatic smell which is soothing and relaxing. This ingredient can also be burned easily. It is perfect for the production of katol, a coil of incense used to kill and repel mosquitoes here in the Philippines. It is more effective when lanzones peelings are dried first under the sun so it will be more combustible. When combined with starch, the group will be able to produce a mosquito coil quite similar to those on the market. The only difference is that our group will be making an insect repellent in the form of a candle.…
