September 11th, 2001, started just like any other day. Little did anyone know the tragic events that would transpire. Terrorists hijacked two planes and flew them into the World Trade Center. The impact caused the buildings to collapse, 2,977 lives were taken. September 11th,2001 will always be remembered, a day that changed America: many lives were affected due to this devastation, leaving the united states terrified, and the world in financial ruined.
To begin with, many lives were affected due to this devastation. For instance, it damaged the nation: emotionally, physically, and mentally. Watching people jump from towers was horrific, it left the public terrified. I could only imagine the pain the victims families felt and still feel till today. They must feel empty and still confused to why such a random act took place. Firefighters, police officers, and paramedics that were called to the scene, ran into the burning building unprepared for what was to come. 343 firefighters died in the collapse of the towers. 23 New York police officers were killed, along with 37 port authority police officers. Also, 43 paramedics were killed in the line of duty. In spite of surviving the attack, many firefighters, citizens, and paramedics were exposed to the toxin in the debris from the twin towers which affected their respiratory systems for the rest of their lives. People in New York and around the United States are still suffering from mental health problems due to the attack. 24 percent of New Yorkers are still depressed from what occurred September 11th, 200l.
Unfortunately, September, 11th 2001 left the United States terrified. After the attack, many citizens around the United States felt frightened for their lives. Before 9/11 people did not really pay attention to the events that might occur to them flying. Flying became a nightmare to the public because people thought they would not return back home safely to their families and loved ones. The government enforced stricker polices at the airports for those who board the planes. The new polices made people uncomfortable. As a result of the fear of air travel, many people decided to drive the trips they had planned. Which unfortunately caused several car accidents, leading to more deaths. Immediately after the attack, the president decided to take a stand against terrorism, sending our troops to war with Afghanistan. Although America had a down fall we all came together as one nation.
During all the chaos from the attack, America failed to realize that the economy was drowning. People were about to lose their jobs, homes and their hope. In fact, an estimated 600,000 jobs were lost and 226,000 of those jobs were in travel and tourism. Airlines also took a big hit, they had to refund ticket purchases for anyone unable to fly. As a result, ticket prices increased. New York especially had the biggest down fall. Decrease in tourism caused hotels to lose 40 percent of business, there for they had to lay off 3,000 workers. Since people were scared to fly not many tourist came to visit. Several small business were destroyed and displaced, leaving a lot of people without hope not knowing what tomorrow would bring. The government helped as much as they could, by providing loans. Most important, gas prices increased to its highest around the United States. Before 9/11 gasoline prices for a gallon was at $1.50. Now after the attack gasoline is at $3.50 a gallon. September, 11th 200l will always be remembered as a great devastation in the United States of America
To conclude, the United States is the land of free, but for a moment in time terrorists took our feeling of safety away. Many lives were emotionally, physically, and mentally damaged from watching the horrific view. Americans all over the United States were impacted in one way or another due to this devastation, leaving the United States terrified, and the world in financial ruin. September 11, 2001 is like a scar, it has healed but the mark will always be there. America came together as one, putting our differences aside to help each other through the struggle and the tears, one nation under God.
