Since the first season of Jersey Shore it has become one of America’s most viewed television shows. Teens are going to local barbershops to get a blowout, to imitate Dj Pauly D’s hairstyle. Others mimicking Vinny’s signature dance move “The Fist Pump.” However, even though the influence of Jersey Shore doesn’t span most of the nation, it certainly has influence among teens and young adults. The Jersey Shore has some negative influences such as the way sex is portrayed, binge drinking, and materialism. Despite all of the negative influences in the Jersey Shore, there are also good traits for teens and young adults to pick up on such as loyalty, family importance and comradery among the group that is actually quite admirable.…
Last week, I wrote about what I thought about the word “culture”, what it meant to me, and how it related of coming of age. I discussed on how culture to me meant the customs and beliefs of your past generation passed on to you and creating that to your image. This week I’ve now realized there are many other factors of culture that influence our way of life. Pop culture plays a big role if not more on who we are and how we behave. I discovered that many aspects like television and social media affect culture and change it frequently. In Tim Delaney’s ‘Pop Culture: An Overview’ he mentioned “popular culture encompasses the most immediate and contemporary aspects of our lives. These aspects are often subject to rapid change, especially in a highly…
Media underwent changes in the 1970s that served as distractions from the government's scandals and increasing stagflation. All the “magazines promoted social reforms with a vigor they had lacked for several years[…]. The United States as a whole may have seems to linger a cultural and political malaise during the 1970s, but the media was more active than ever.”(The 1970s:Media:Overview para 1). Literary media has always existed, but is was in the 70’s that their embracement of the time periods changed and turned it into a positive light to give the people hope. The early 70’s revolved around young radicals creating their own magazines and newspapers that featured political issues, sex, drugs, and rock music. Rolling Stone is an example that…
“Gym, Tanning, Laundry”, these three words have become increasingly popular among teenagers because of MTV’s hit reality television show, Jersey Shore. Television shows and their stars can become very influential to many of their viewers. Many of these viewers strive to be like these stars and mimic their style and attitude, in hopes of living the same careless lifestyle that has made these stars known around the world. Unfortunately, these television shows don’t always portray certain aspects of life realistically, and therefore send a false message that can be very deceiving. Studies show that television shows tend to follow several popular trends that do indeed portray the wrong reality.…
Entertainment media has had a profound effect on the way American culture has evolved. It has at times brought people together and equally torn them apart. Music, television, and film provide an incomparable outlet for expression. They allow individuals (and groups) to inform, to share what is important to them, to be creative and innovative. With all of the different types of entertainment media in America, society is exposed to so much more than would have been possible without these mediums.…
Film and television have played a big role in Americans lives since their creation. Americans have seen how it has improved but most importantly what has changed as well. Since the beginning of history, one of the main purposes of television and film has been to entertain people and make them laugh. As quality changed overtime, so did the meaning of it. Modern television shows have now shifted their focus and expanded their purposes of television and film. Today, what is shown on the screen can have great effects on Americans. Television and film can be harmful to Americans by influencing bad behaviors, categorizing people and causing many to be unsatisfied with their lifestyles. As of 2016, it is accurate to say that many of the shows and…
First of all, the reason Hollywood has such a profound impact on the appearance on American society, is because they supply “over 70 percent of the European film makers and 90 percent” to the rest of the world. Sadly, Hollywood targets the “younger population audience who constitute the bulk” of the film industry, which has a tremendous impact to what movies contain. Of course, being a younger crowd will imply more “action, violence, sex, and special effects,” which seems as though it will not have an effect but it does. Since Hollywood is the biggest supplier of films to other countries, whatever is shown in these films (action, violence, sex, and special effects) will reflect the “American lifestyle.” Thanks to these images, “Hollywood has made Americanism a dirty word.”…
The major developments in the evolution of mass media during the last century is technology. Today technology is major to society and it is what we mainly rely on vs. back in the day they only had newspapers and mail. In today’s society, a regular person will wake up in the morning look at their phone and check the time. After they then check the time they begin surfacing the internet to see what is happening around the world. They might turn on the TV and watch the news. After they get ready they will get into their cars, turn on the radio and listen to music and/or talk show station. After reading this you will think this is a normal morning. Back in the old…
There are many advertisements being held by the media and television commercials that affect the American culture. They do not just affect the adults but the children as well for instants, this week my children and I were watching the Disney channel and we saw a commercial of Chucky Cheese and right away my children say they want to go there, so to satisfy my children now I want to take them there so they could enjoy themselves and now I am going to have to spend money that I was not planning on and it might not even be that exciting to them as it was shown on TV.…
In American culture, media consumption holds a significant amount of influence over the way individuals perceive the world around them. While various forms of media can be used to provide information and entertainment, hurtful stereotypes, such as those based on gender, can be found in all forms of media in some capacity. Due to the considerable role the media plays in the everyday lives of most Americans, the normalization of these stereotypes can have an adverse effect on individuals who are members of the group being targeted. With the increase in accessibility brought about by devices such as tablets, laptops, and smartphones, the impact of media continues to grow. According to an article on forbes.com written by Mark Hughes in 2015, the…
Popular culture surrounds us every day; when we go to the grocery store it’s there in the checkout line, on the car radio when you drive down the road, and on every webpage that we visit. Not only is popular culture everywhere around us, it influences nearly every decision that we make; from the television shows we watch, the cloths we wear, the food we eat, or even the cars we choose to drive. It is inevitable to be influenced by what we see every day and for it to change how we perceive the world around.…
1. Hollywood movies affect national culture outside the United States because it leads people to stereo-type other cultures. Such as the stereo-type of Japanese people as robotic caricatures who mix there L’s and R’s and Bill Murry who played a character was taking a shower in a Five-star hotel and has to bend down to wash his hair in the shower but in reality their isn’t a five star hotel in Tokyo that hasn’t accounted for the varying heights of its guest. Some positive effects of Hollywood movies on world cultures is that it brings cultures together through a sense of comfortably and laugher.…
Upon its introduction up until the dot com era television was the most popular medium. The ability for news and events to be televised and viewed instantly around the world has given our society the ability to connect with the world by the push of a button. Although TV has made information more assessable it has its weak points as well.…
In his famous “Vast Wasteland” address to the National Association of Broadcasters in May of 1961, Newton Minow spoke about the power of television to influence the taste, knowledge, and opinions of its viewers around the world. Minow is correct in his assertion that television has “limitless capabilities for good – and for evil.” The good qualities of television include educational television and weather channels; however, the bad qualities are also relevant, such as violence and mind-numbing stupidity.…
Culture comes in a variety of forms and generally is relative to the person defining it. According to Shaw and Lee, pop culture comes in the form of television, movies, music, magazines, and the Internet along with the traditional literature and the arts. These various forms of culture pervade our everyday lives by creating illusions of reality of which we, as the viewers, are expected to adopt into our lives. In these mediums, especially television, there are stories and narratives that either subliminally or explicitly convey messages about human behavior and interactions. Amongst these messages are those that define or perpetuate gender inequalities, roles and attitudes.…
