Effects of Central Rift Geological Formation on Economic Activities
EFFECTS OF CENTRAL RIFT GEOLOGICAL FORMATION ON ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
a) Farming
At the floor of the central rift, the volcanic soils that have been eroded from the top of the mountains like menengai, has been put into use through farming. There is wheat farming in Nakuru, maize plantations, Irish potato growing in the central rift due to fertile soils which support the growth of the crops.
Also there is tea growing in Kericho as a result of its favourable physical factors such as climate, rainfall and soils which enable growth of tea in that area.
Due to good soils in Naivasha, there is growing of flowers and horticulture due to favourable conditions.
Also other economic activities in the central rift include dairy and beef farming in Delamere farm in Gilgil due to its flat landscape which allows cattle keeping in the region.
On the other hand, at the top of the mountains, farming cannot be easily practiced because the land consist of bare and infertile rocks as well as due to inaccessibility for example Mt .Longonot and Menengai.

b) Tourism
As volcanicity took place, magma spread over large area on the earth’s surface before it cooled down. This lead to the formation of plains and plateaus. This formed good habitats for different animal, bird and plant species such as flamingos at Lake Nakuru. This formed good attraction sites and beautiful sceneries which gave the central rift the aesthetic value. Then these sites were fenced and put aside as tourist attraction sites which in turn act as a source of employment to the people of the region. c) Trade
Some regions due to rift valley formation and volcanicity processes formed some regions e.g. the valley floor which became good settlement areas. This is because they had good firm rocks which could enable construction of tall buildings which are stable. As the result of settlement and construction of tall

    * The peak of the Teotihuacan were believed to have been brought about by volcanic activity. This means that many of the suburban areas were disrupted or destroyed, forcing many farming families to move to urban areas. This led to rapid growth of the city elite class, although it forced many farmers to live in the city and walk to their fields every day.…

The mountain slopes of the Andes are used for a variety of farming practices. The best land can be found on the valley floors, but the system of the terraces dug into the valley sides and held up by retaining walls has been used to bring the lands on the valley sides into food production. The flat terraces help to hold up water in a region where most crops are grown in the lower areas and include soybeans, rice and cotton. However, the main essential crop of the Andes is the potato, and there are hundreds of different varieties found in the mountains. Most farming is for survival, with the food grown for personal consumption (self-feeding), but there is some commercial farming as well.…

For example while learning about China, I learned that they had very fertile land, but since it was mountainous they couldn’t do much, but made way with Rice paddies. Rice Paddies are flooded fields in warm areas were the rice grows best. Since Rice grows more food per acre than Wheat, according to Document B, it helps support population growth. Which helps influence the civilization. I mentioned before that China was mountainous. These mountains acted as a natural boundary against other places, but it made China very ethnocentric along with their many other natural borders. These mountains caused the people of China to live in river valleys.…

Firstly, one place where tectonic activity occurs is at oceanic to oceanic constructive plate boundaries. Here two plates diverge or move away from each other, pushed apart by huge convection currents In the earth’s mantle. These convection currents are initiated by heat energy produced from radioactive decay in the earth’s core. As the convection currents move the plates away from each other, there is a weaker zone in the crust and an increase in heat near the surface. The hotter, expanded crust forms a ridge. Magma rises up from the mantle in the gap. The lava cools, solidifies and forms a chain of volcanic mountains thousands of miles long down the middle of the ocean eg. Atlantic. There are transform faults at right angles to the ridge. The movement of these faults causes rift valleys to occur. Examples of these landforms created by constructive plate margins are the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MIR) , and the Great African rift valley (GARV). The MIR is the result of the North American plate and Eurasian plate diverging in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Here, volcanic islands such as Iceland, the Canary islands and ascension island have been created by the rising magma from the mantle. The GARV is an example of where the crust has dropped down between parallel faults to form rift valleys. As the crust subducts into the mantle it melts causing igneous activity below, magma to rise and therefore volcanoes erupt on the surface as a result. Evidence of this volcanic activity is shown by Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro.…

Geography played a very important role in the making of the British colonies in North America. During early settlement, colonies were formed along the coast or rivers. Because colonies were completely linked and dependent on Europe at this point in time, the coast made it easier for two countries to transport to one another. To the west, the Appalachian Mountains provided a barrier between the inland Native America tribes and the settlers who were often at war with one another. The locations where the English colonists had settled affected their society greatly and were the primary factors for shaping the colonies into what they became. In some areas, the geography influenced the living and farming conditions for the better, but in other areas, for the worse. From the swampy areas of Jamestown to the bays of the Northern colonies, each played a huge part in the development of the colonies.…

The Wa rely on mountain farming, which varies in technique and productivity in different regions. Basically, they have three different methods of farming, which developed at different times and now coexist to help adapt to different ecological environments. The oldest method is slash-and-burn cultivation in which they plant seeds with a wooden stick and rely on the ash of wild plants to fertilize the crop. After a year the land is abandoned and it is about eight to ten years before they utilize the same area. The second method combines the slash-and-burn technique with plowing by using iron tools to spread the seed. These two methods provide the major source of food for the Wa, and are applied to about half of the total farm land. The third farming method is to cultivate rice paddy fields, which exist mostly on the outskirts of the A Wa Shan region where the land is level and close to water supplies. Rice paddies account for about five percent of their total farm land. Labor…
