New Imperialism started in the 1800s and lasted to the early 1900s. It was dominated by industrialized nations, such as, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and the United States. These countries directly controlled over colonies in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Nigeria is located on the western coast of Africa and is abundant in natural gas, petroleum, tin, iron ore, coal, limestone, niobium, lead, zinc, and arable land (CIA). Nigeria was an area with many independent states before British colonization, each governed by a king. The Portuguese were the first to arrive to Nigeria in 1472, and in the 17th century other Europeans came.
