EFFECTS OF MASS MEDIA

What were the major developments in the evolution of mass media during the 20th century?
Some of the major developments of mass media in the 20th century were the television the cell phone and the internet. These three items alone have changed the way that we view media for example we couldn’t even view media on a cell phone until about six or seven years ago. This alone changed mass media because a person can view the news and watch videos right from their cell phone and since everyone has a cell phone almost anyone can do it. The television has also changed the evolution of mass media as well because they are making new T.V.’s that can almost do anything that a computer can. Ten to fifteen years ago all televisions were the same. However in today’s time there is so much that a T.V. can do. For example surf the web, play movies, or connect to a computer the possibilities are endless. I think that the technology that is being used today is much more advanced then when it was a few years ago. For example the internet when it first came out it was slow and you could only access it using dial up. In today’s world the internet is on every phone new T.V. Also there are different types of internet such as dial up, DSl, and broadband. All these connections are different but they all help you surf the internet at different speeds. I look forward to seeing the technologies of the future and how they will develop mass media even further.
How did each development influence American culture?
I think that each development influenced American culture in several different ways. For example because you can surf the internet from almost anywhere it made accessing information that much easier. Also it made going to school easier as well for example if a person has a busy schedule and they don’t have time to be in a traditional classroom but they still want to go to school to pursue their education then they can enroll in online schooling and earn their degree on their own time and still do the things that they have to do on a daily basis such as go to work and take care of home. This has benefited many because most people do have a busy schedule and going back to school in a traditional setting is just out of the question for them due to their everyday obligations. Also the development of the cell phone has impacted American culture in many different was also because you can now access the internet as well as news and videos all from your phone. This has changed American culture because now some people don’t need to have access to a computer to do some of the things that you once could only do on a computer. Because of this younger children now have cellphones simply because their parents want their children to have access to this type of information when they are doing their school work. Also the internet has changed the way some traditional classrooms work. For example about ten or fifteen years ago the classwork was all done on pencil and paper in this day and age it is more interactive in the sense that it involves computers and not just pencil and paper. I think that the evolution of mass media has progressed greatly over the years and helped us as Americans as well.

Major developments in the evolution of mass media in the 20th century include magazines and newspapers in the early 1900’s. During this time newspapers were a main source of media to the masses. In the 1940’s radio emerged as a new source of media. Many Americans at that time would crowd around the radio to receive entertainment programming in the evening as well as news updates about the war. Sometime during the 1950’s television was added to the list of media sources along with newspapers and radios. Many Americans who could not afford to have a television still relied on the radio and newspapers for their information. The launch of the first satellite in 1962 gave America access to worldwide news and events. Today the use of satellite technology can tell you where you are going if you don’t have a map or tell you where you left your cell phone. The use of these new technological inventions occurs every day. Since then to the present day many other forms of mass media have emerged as forms of communication. Mobile phones, computers, and the internet. I know older Americans may prefer a newspaper but many people simply check the news at their computer when they get to work. Even radio stations broadcast over the internet through Smartphone applications. With the popular tablets and ipads most literature is purchased online from stores like Amazon. I am very thankful for the advances in technology that are available today, without them it would be nearly impossible for working parents like me to continue their education and provide for our families simultaneously.…

Technology has played a big role in electronic and digital media. Technological inventions keep companies competing in the same areas. “Digital and electronic media today is plentiful with the information highway (Internet) providing answers at our fingertips, along with cell phones that are equipped with cameras and Internet connection”(Thomas 2010). Today media has a major impact on society. Since technology is ever changing, society is forced to keep up with the technological changes and advances. From satellite television to wireless electronics, society wants all the new technological inventions ever made. Society has grown dependent on electronic products, spending less time with people and more time on the internet. Before television was invented kids were forced to play outside with the neighborhood children. Before the internet or World Wide Web, libraries were used religiously allowing everyone to research on their own and take time to read books. Digital cameras allow us to capture moments, save print and share. With inventions like memory cards, we are able to save any and everything. Today computers are used in schools for easier access to topics discussed in class. Without chemical and electronic technological inventions society would be still looking for ways to invent and create.…

In the 20th century mass media was considered to be eight categories: books, newspapers, magazines, recordings, radio, movies, television and the internet. When I think of mass media the internet and cell phones come to mind. Cell phones have evolved since the 21st century. They blew up by giving people the access to the internet on cell phones. There is not anything people cannot do on their cell phones. Television has gone from having no color to color and the remote attached to cordless remotes. They are also 3D and the picture is much clearer and movies have the same developments. Internet has had and is still the number one media that has developed or evolved over the last century. When I talk to my grandparents they tell me how times are so different and advanced. They think that it is great but also scary at times. My grandparents cannot begin to imagine what the media will be like when they pass away. The internet will always be renewed and updated. There will be better, newer, and faster ways to learn. Mankind will never stop evolving.…

Where would society be without mass media? How would our society evolve with electronic communication? These are important questions. They demand investigation into how our world functions on a daily basis. The answers to these questions tell us how we think, act and feel every day. Without mass media and without mass communication, society would look much different. Every generation had its own leap in technology which dramatically changed the course of human existence. With each technological leap, communication and mass media evolved with it. When broadcast radio became mainstream, households across America gained access to live news and entertainment. When computers became the main source of filing and storing information, government, media, and the general public had a new resource for communication. As technology grew, so did society’s demand and with each new image, debate, journal entry or story, came a new challenge for the media industry. Media and society have a symbiotic relationship. There is the idea that media drives society’s conversation. Can it also be true that society drives the media?…

Media has evolved constantly in the last century. There is a new source or outlet of media being invented. Our nation has moved from newspapers and radio broadcasts to internet and cell phones to receive the news of the day. Radio and newspapers are losing popularity as quick as it gained popularity in the beginning. People can now be updated with news stories and global news on the go. There is no longer the need to flip through a paper or wait through commercials, the news is as easy as a click away. There are some disadvantages to this new form of media delivery, however. Traditional media outlets like newspapers, radios, and television are widely available to everyone, where as internet access has a smaller audience due to expense rates/plans. Although, the media is changing daily news is either broadcasted or by word of mouth in America. I believe that there have been many television shows and movies that have displayed the culture of times in them. People have been influenced by these movies and television shows because some individuals can really relate to the lifestyles or actions of the people in these movies or shows. Especially with videos out there for learning things, I think that can really help with teaching people rather than just trying to get them to read materials to learn. It gives a different view of the materials and what is supposed to be learned. Visual learning become global and many people are taking advantage of it while its here. The internet provides visual entertainment to all that have access to it. The media is all around us and what surrounds us will have an effect on any and everyone in the world. For example:…

Transmitting information electronically and digitally through television, movies, radio, newspapers, magazines, brochures, and books. For a large part of the 20th century, television and radios were stationary devices. The radio had news broadcast and entertainment programs. Also, with the discovery of radio waves, it allowed to transmit information over long distances without use of wires. Another was the telephone, the telephone made it easier to call someone and talk to them instead of having to wait on telegrams. This later led to the making of cell phones, smart phones, and PDA’s. The newspapers had been around for a long time, and they were the only way for people to communicate publicly as a whole community. Television is what had changed things, the first television was black and white. Many people only owned one television. For the longest time the only programming that was offered was only 3 major companies, ABC, NBC, and CBS. Only those with money were able to afford the technology. The Apple computer was then made.
