What were the major developments in the evolution of mass media during the 20th century?
The major developments in evolution of mass media during the 20th century were newspaper, radio, television, telephone, and Internet. These five developments plus more were big factors for how our culture is today. Newspaper was a good way to get the news in the area you lived in, and also news around the world. The newspaper is still widely used today except many people can view it online, which we will get to. Then the radio was very helpful and useful by being able to transport news without the use of any kind of wiring. They also used radio to listen to different forms of entertainment such as programs that had a story line. They could also hear news broadcast to let them know what was going on in the world. Television was an exciting new form of mass media and people loved it because it was able to give people a visual of what they were hearing. They were able to hear and see the news, hear and see a story that was being told, they could hear and see people performing with singing, dancing and or just plain acting. The telephone was also exciting to be able to talk to anyone else who had a telephone. Even though they started out and are still connected by wires from house to house, they are now also connected by wireless waves. Being able to have a phone with you at all time and not having to be at home to answer has changed many activities that can be performed today. Now that is where we can add Internet to the mix. Internet has shaped the world and our cultures today because there are so many aspects to it. Being able to talk to people, look for objects to buy without leaving the home, play games and many more. I feel that these have shaped the world of mass media during the 20th century, and will be used for a long time and even eventually more activities that we cannot even imagine yet. I look forward to the advancement of these developments.
How did each development influence American culture?
Each development of newspaper, radio, television, telephone, and Internet developed and influenced American culture in many ways. Newspaper had the effect of letting people know about what was going on in the world and keeping up with that knowledge. The newspaper also helped people to realize what the world was really capable of. Radio was also used in the same way as the newspaper but being able to hear what was being broadcast was just different way of getting information out. So radio influenced by encouraging the people to gain more knowledge. Television at first was more of mainly entertainment of sorts. They did have news and others information, but it has influenced American culture by letting people make statements, speak their mind and opinions, in addition to learning and gaining knowledge. Telephone was exciting and let people connect with those that they did not live near or in reaching distance right way. People took advantage and still do, using the telephone to stay connected. The telephone and now cell phone has all kinds of capabilities and people are able to teach, learn, show, give and understand people in many ways. It has influenced American culture by giving people freedom to speak to anyone else who has a phone. The Internet is also connected to the cell phone and also is a way of teaching, learning, giving, showing and giving information to all people around the world. Not just Americans, but all the world. It has influenced us by giving us freedom of speech, freedom of action, freedom of thought and freedom in being able do many actions including actions that are illegal or others do not approve of.

In the 20th century mass media was considered to be eight categories: books, newspapers, magazines, recordings, radio, movies, television and the internet. When I think of mass media the internet and cell phones come to mind. Cell phones have evolved since the 21st century. They blew up by giving people the access to the internet on cell phones. There is not anything people cannot do on their cell phones. Television has gone from having no color to color and the remote attached to cordless remotes. They are also 3D and the picture is much clearer and movies have the same developments. Internet has had and is still the number one media that has developed or evolved over the last century. When I talk to my grandparents they tell me how times are so different and advanced. They think that it is great but also scary at times. My grandparents cannot begin to imagine what the media will be like when they pass away. The internet will always be renewed and updated. There will be better, newer, and faster ways to learn. Mankind will never stop evolving.…

Where would society be without mass media? How would our society evolve with electronic communication? These are important questions. They demand investigation into how our world functions on a daily basis. The answers to these questions tell us how we think, act and feel every day. Without mass media and without mass communication, society would look much different. Every generation had its own leap in technology which dramatically changed the course of human existence. With each technological leap, communication and mass media evolved with it. When broadcast radio became mainstream, households across America gained access to live news and entertainment. When computers became the main source of filing and storing information, government, media, and the general public had a new resource for communication. As technology grew, so did society’s demand and with each new image, debate, journal entry or story, came a new challenge for the media industry. Media and society have a symbiotic relationship. There is the idea that media drives society’s conversation. Can it also be true that society drives the media?…
