So for the sake of agreeing to disagree, I believe that we need to stop blaming the media for this inconvenience. Body image is the image an individual holds of his or her own physical appearance, which also happens to be what they believe represents the way others perceive him or her. How people see themselves vary from person to person. Of these groups of people, teens happen to seem dissatisfied with their own bodies more than any other age group (Webb 564). Researchers and other observers theorize that our tech savviness is the cause for our dissatisfaction. Though the media is a drive for how we see ourselves, we are not forced to see it as it is. A key characteristic that makes us human is …show more content…
Researchers from Texas A&M International University surveyed roughly 250 volunteers. With these volunteers, observation was done over if and how they were influenced by media or peers. As a result, media had little to no effect on the participants whilst peer competition predicted negative long term effects on teen’s body image. According to the authors of a study in Journal of Youth and Adolescence, “Our results suggest that only peer competition, not television or social media use, predict negative outcomes for body image.” A short film called Teen Truth: An Inside Look At Body Image was produced concerning body image and the disorders affiliated with it. The video I will soon show consists of several teens listing of disorders, thoughts about their own body, and the use of drugs and other enhancing products to fill the niche of ideal body images. The full film was made to influence its viewers to find self acceptance and has won a Telly award for doing so. Teen Truth: An Inside Look At Body Image -

The term body image refers to a person's sense of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the physical appearance of his or her body (“Body Image”). Girls are susceptible to influences telling them what they should look like even at a young age. According to a study published in the journal BMC Public Health, children as young as seven and eight-years-old already have notions about the ideal body. An analysis of more than 4,000 students from Nova Scotia revealed that young girls' happiness with their bodies is directly linked to how thin they are (Sharples). Backing up these notions is the media that these young girls are faced with. For example, in all of Disney’s movies the lead female role is portrayed by a stick thin, yet voluptuous woman.…

There is an obvious correlation between the media and the mass’ distorted views on body image and what beauty really is. This much is clear. Because everybody looks at celebrities, and judges how they look whether they are skinny girl or a ridiculously buff guy, and compare it to how other people and they look this has been going on for a quite some time. But the more important question is does the media’s depiction of the ideal lean/muscular body lead to the increased use of radically unhealthy tactics in order to change body image by the general public? It is common knowledge that everybody strives to improve his or her body image because appearance is important; it is simply part of human nature to want to look better. But when striving…

In some ways people can control the social factors that negatively affect their body perception. However, the mass media is every where and can be hard to avoid. Past research indicates that by the time a girl turns 6 she is already dissatisfied with her body image (Hayes & Tantleff,2010). The social standards of today emphasizes the need for women to be thin and blemish free, setting a physical expectation of beauty that is beyond impossible to reach ( Tiggemann, 2003). In America, it is extremely hard for anyone to feel confident with themselves because they are always being bombarded with images and ideas of these beautiful, perfect people plastered wherever you go. Having to see this all of the time can really put a strain on people when they look in the mirror and don't see the same thing(The Influences 15).Although, the media doesn't directly cause eating disorders or body issues. It puts the idea that there is something wrong with your body if you do not match the images you are staring at on a screen, magazine, etc. "They exert powerful influences on values, attitudes, and practices for body image, diet, and activity”(The Influences 54). The media has an enormous image of conforming young minds by telling them what is pretty, desirable, or how to look. Cultures are judging people based off appearance rather than intelligence or character(The Influences 9).Author Wen-ying Sylvia Chou of the U.S. National Institutes of Health states that we should change the face of social media. Instead of breeding vicious comments and cyber-bullying, we should create a supportive…

The media has less affected male body image. Men have historically been judged by strength and achievement; however, they are not immune to the media’s influence on appearance. Marketing and television shows have created an environment where a man’s physique has become as important as his possessions and his achievements. This causes men to want the ideal body a man should have that the media displays, so they would take medication’s or over work their body to try and attempt at gaining the “ideal” physique. As with women the ideal male body image has become unrealistic and impossible to achieve.…
