Americans and individuals from around the world are suffering from being overweight or obese. There are many health issues associated with being obese, and the more a person weighs, the easier these health risks can develop. The terms "obesity" refers to a person’s weight when it is greater than it needs to be for a certain height or a person’s body mass index (BMI). BMI is figured out by using a mathematical formula by using your height and weight.
Effect that Obesity has had on The Community
Obesity has a personal effect on the community. Too many children are becoming obese and aren’t interested in playing outside anymore and the parents are too busy working to realize. Fast food has taken over our country because it
is convenience. The type of community and lifestyle we live in is always on the go and fast food establishments are feeding off of it.
Contributing Factor to Obesity and Two Preventative Measures
A factor that plays a big part in obesity is a person environment. If the environment that a person is living in doesn't support a healthy lifestyle then is it is more than likely that obesity will arise. The environment has everything to do with what food you eat, where you’re eating, how much you’re eating, how much money a person makes, to afford healthy foods, and what kind of health based facilities are in your area.
Two ways to prevent a person from getting obese is to follow a healthy food plan and to be more active in your daily lifestyle. Eating healthy is one of the biggest ways to stay healthy and lose weight. What you eat has a lot to do with weight gain or loss. Making healthy food choices and watching your portion size can help prevent obesity. Another preventative measure is to be more physically fit or active. That doesn’t always mean going to a gym and working out for an hour. It could be something simple as going for a walk on your lunch break or using the stairs instead of an elevator. A person needs some type of physical activity once a day to stay healthy and prevent getting obese.
One sociological theory that relates to obesity.
The environment and social class of the family can be a sociological factor to obesity as well. If a family is lower class then more than likely they cannot afford healthy food. Unfortunately, healthy foods or organic foods are way more expensive than a cheeseburger from McDonalds, which is loaded with saturated fat and carbohydrates. Sometimes the dollar menu is all people can afford and if you look at all the items, it’s basically all fatty foods. So, being lazy or accusing a person of overeating is not always the case. A more effective solution to obesity should be change social humiliations related to being overweight and make the healthier foods cheaper.
In conclusion, there are many contributing factors that can lead to obesity. The environment has a major effect on a person’s weight. Something needs to be done about the prices of healthier food and there should be programs to implement healthy eating at home and for working parents. Another good idea is if someone created a healthy fast food facility. There are so many ways to eliminate this unnecessary health hazard, yet things stay the same.
