Effects of Sports in Society

Athletics have almost become a way of life in today’s society. Not only in the United States have sports become extremely popular but even throughout the entire world. There are many ways in which athletics have made a major impact on society and people’s interactions with eachother. Plenty of positive effects on society have come from athletics, such as values of work ethic and teammwork, leadership development, and women equalities. But some could argue that there have also been some negative effects, both of which will be explored throughout the essay.
Sports have been said to build character in terms of teamwork, loyalty, and sacrafice. Athletes are able to better handel the challenges of life as they see teams fighting on the field of play. One journal states “Team sports create an understanding of teamwork and loyalty, build players confidence, teach how to fail and recover, and build a competative spirit”. (Source 6) It seems there are very few people these days who do not get the experience of athletics in their childhood. Sports could be one of the most important institutions in a persons childhood. Not only is the child learning such lessons as teamwork and building a work ethic, their interaction with other children and coaches so closes resembles the work-world for adults. Athletes do not choose every player on their team and sometimes not even the coach they play for, they play on a team because of the sport itself, because of the activity involved. These players are forced to cooperate and work with their teammates and respect their coaches if they want to succeed, even if they do not always agree. Business is about winning and losing, just like sports. Lessons learned on a softball diamond or basketball court are often unavailable in business-school lecture hall.
