On December 7, 1941, an attack was launched on America that immediately drew them into World War II. Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes spent their morning commuting to an American naval base at Pearl Harbor. Once arrived, these planes destroyed twenty naval vessels along with 300 airplanes. Not only did they destroy American property, they took the lives of over 2000 American soldiers and sailors. Following the attack, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave a powerful speech from Washington D.C. asking Congress to declare war on Japan.…
The Japanese, who had been extending their empire in the Pacific, were eventually embargoed from trade by America after their take-over of China. Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7th, 1941, killing over 2300 troops. It was the largest attack on American grounds until the bombing of the World Trade Center, September 11th, 2001. America declared war on the Japanese immediately after the attack, and three fronts were opened- namely the Pacific and the European fronts, and the North African front that was fought until…
September 1940 Japan sends troops into northern Indochina and signs a military agreement, the Tripartite Pact, with Germany and Italy.…
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor because they believed that the Yamato race was the superior one and their ruling needed to expand across the world, America stopped trading oil with Japan and the U.S. imposed many embargoes that hurt Japan. One reason…
The view that Pearl Harbor was the cause of the United States entering the war can be illustrated based on relations with Japan, Franklin Roosevelt’s speech that acted as a last resort in attempt to protect the United States, and the unforeseen attack on the island of Oahu. Japan and the United States had an ongoing tension which is why Pearl Harbor, today from a historian's point of view does not seem like the attack was a complete shock. However, during 1941, the United States was not prepared for Japan’s attack. The United States cut off Japan’s intake of supplies from the US causing a dip in Japan’s economy. Japan had no other relations with other countries in order to trade resources, putting Japan in a desperate position.…
Pearl Harbor was the first time the U.S. was invaded by another country. This had forever changed the history of America. Starting just before 8 a.m. Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan, and the Japanese were bombed by Japan, and the Japanese were able to destroy about 8 battleships, 20 American naval vessels, and 300+ airplanes. Pearl Harbor is an American naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii. The next day President Franklin D. Roosevelt did the right thing to ask Congress to declare war on Japan.. And they had approved with only one vote against it.…
The attack on Pearl Harbor began as part of Japan's larger plan to conquer Southeast Asia. The Japanese wanted to do this to secure raw materials and other natural resources that they lacked. Since America supplied more than half of Japan's supply of these materials Japan was reluctant to push the United States too far, but they also had intentions of getting control of its own sources of raw materials. The attack happened in the early morning of December 7,…
In Pearl Harbor and the Coming of the Pacific War by Akira Iriye, the author explores the events and circumstances that ended in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, an American naval base. Iriye assembles a myriad of primary documents, such as proposals and imperial conferences, as well as essays that offer different perspectives of the Pacific War. Not only is the material in Pearl Harbor and the Coming of the Pacific War informative of the situation between Japan and the United States, but it also provides a global context that allows for the readers to interpret Pearl Harbor and the events leading up to it how they may. Ultimately, both Pearl Harbor and the subsequent Pacific War between Japan and the U.S. were unavoidable due to the fact that neither nation was willing to bow down to the demands of the other.…
The attack was not a terrorist attack because Japan targeted a military base and not civilians, it was rather an act of war. On a website it stated another reason why it was not a terrorist attack was because Japan had declared war on the U.S. before the bombings (Pearl Harbor Terrorist or Act of War usmessageboard.com). Although the U.S. was not fast enough to translate the message which was sent about 30 minutes before the attack.…
The Japanese couldn't be trusted and therefore acted as a potential threat to the nation, something that the U.S could not push aside after the Pearl Harbor attack. The attack of Pearl Harbor forced the U.S to take the necessary measure to ensure the well being of the U.S. Many Americans believed that within those…
Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Americans were living life as usual. They were supplying other countries with no desire of war. They even passed a Lend Lease Act to make supplying other countries more business focused and neutral. Americans were at peace. President Franklin Roosevelt gave an addressed on October of 1940, “I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and again; your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars.” Supplying other countries was business. That changed as Japan conquered northern French Indochina and expanded into China. The United States noticed this was going to be a big issue if Japan was not stopped. In 1940 they embargoed all scrap iron and oil to Japan which prolonged Japans expansion into China. This also led to Britain and the Netherlands cutting oil supply to Japan. This crippled Japans army effectively and became a big issue for Japan. This would force Japan to have to make quicker and better decisions with the limited amount of sources they had. Japan was riding on a huge momentum going into China, but the United States were starting to take that away from them little by little. The United States started looking more and more like an obstacle for Japan.…

The United States declares war! On December 7, 1941, in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, a group of Japanese planes swooped over Pearl Harbor and bombed the U.S. Battleships. The reason for this was that the U.S. told the Japanese that if they bombed the Philippines we would go to war with their country. Therefore they bombed us thinking it would stop us from attacking them and give them an easy shot at hurting the Philippines. But after they bombed the U.S.they bombed the Philippines and we decided to take out two major Japanese cities.…
First, on December 7, 1941, Japan bombed the Pearl Harbor. Japan had always wanted an empire in Asia, so in early 1931 japan set off on their quest and forcefully moved into China. In 1937, Japan launched a major offensive thinking they would force China into submission. By 1939, the Chinese capital was forced to move from Nanjing to the inland area of Hankow. The United States was concerned over Japan’s ambitions cut off 90% of Japan’s raw materials required for war production. The United States had then demanded that the aggressive actions against China and Indonesia be halted. To Japan abandonment was unthinkable, so they chose to attack. By late 1941, Japan had believed the pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor was their only threat. By the end of the attack, the Japanese sunk almost every battleship in Pearl Harbor. At the end of the attack, more than 2,500 Americans and sailors were killed, and another 1,000 were wounded. The day after the attack…
A surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese changed that and led to the U.S. to retaliate with Atomic bombs. Pearl Harbor In the early 1940’s the United States stopped supporting Japan by no longer exporting fuel, oil and metals. This tactic was used to hinder the Japanese military from expanding. The Japanese knew the United States were bound to join the war, but they also knew that America was not ready.…
