I – Before the Normans: The Anglo-Saxons
Before the Normans, the Anglo-Saxons were in control of England and had strong ties with Scandinavian. The Anglo-Saxons came from Saxony, Jutes and Anglia (the equivalent of Germany and Denmark nowadays). The first wave of Anglo-Saxons settled in the 6th century and they were followed by two waves of Vikings in the 8th and 10th century. The Anglo-Saxons replaced the previous population. Anglo-Saxons’ form of government and cultural tradition retained. In the first years of his reign, William faced invasions and rebellions both in England and Normandy. Now William had to deal with England and Normandy because he was still Duke of Normandy. In England, there was Vikings’ invasions. Before the years of invasions there was rebellion against Norman rules. By 1071, William hold on England was relatively secure and Norman rules reign over the land. A powerful lord let the lesser-lord enjoy the land, hold the land against military service. This is not entirely new. Land for service was already in place before the Norman conquest. The Norman conquer extended the system along the French model, which led to deep transformation of social relation. The feudal system imposed by the Norman was a triangular system. At the top: the king of England who controlled all the lands in England. The next level is made of barons (high aristocrat) and on the other side there is the bishops (social equivalent of barons). The barons were the main tenant and they hold their land directly from the king and gave it to a certain number of knights. The knights are slightly below the barons and they were the fighter. They hold their land from the barons in exchange for direct military service. Of course, they had less land than the barons. Below the knights were the peasants and they were three kind of
