Effects of Water Resources
1. Video: Protecting Americans From Danger in the Drinking Water
This video describes the dangers of the Chromium 6 in the groundwater supplies in our nation. There is an ongoing controversy over whether or not the amounts of chemical present in the water can still be considered safe drinking water. According to the video, nearly 70 million people are drinking water that could be contaminated by this chemical.
This issue affects me directly in the sense that Chromium 6 has been found in cities surrounding where my family and friends reside in Arizona and Wisconsin. Being that Chromium 6 has been linked to allergic skin reactions, this leaves me with concern for their health.
2. Diagram: Sources of Groundwater Contamination
The diagram here illustrates the main sources of ground water contamination through color codes and symbols. Even though most contaminations occur naturally, there are a few that are caused indirectly as well. Pathogens from faulty sewers, metals from landfill leaching, acids from acid rain and salts from loss of wetlands are just some examples of indirect pollution.
This issue affects me both directly and indirectly. I am now more aware of the different ways that water supply can become contaminated. Learning that there is usually an increase in taxes to cover the costs to clean and filter water, affects me indirectly.
3. Map: Groundwater Pollution in the United States
In this map it shows areas within the United States that have the most groundwater pollution. There is at least one if not more causing factors for these pollutions in all of these areas. Municipal and industrial wastes, including wastes from oil and gas fields and toxic industrial wastes are a few examples.
This issue affects me directly because I live in an area where nitrate contamination of drinking water is a growing problem. Another reason why I prefer myself and
