Egg Osmosis

Title: Creating the chemical reaction of Osmosis with an Egg.

Purpose: We are taking a large single cell (the egg) and demonstrating Osmosis. Osmosis is a type of diffusion where the water molecules is the solution that is being moved. Osmosis is the movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration.

Introduction: When trying to create an osmosis reaction, it is important to understand Hypotonic and Hypertonic solutions. When a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution water diffuses from its surroundings and will enter the cell and cause it to swell. Both plant and animal cells when placed in a hypertonic solution, water will leave the cell and the shell will shrink because the water moves from the cells which have the higher water concentration to the surroundings. Diffusion is a passive process where the cell has no control over the rate or direction of diffusion. The direction of diffusion is determined by the relative concentration of specific molecules on each side of the membrane. The energy supplied for osmosis to occur comes from the kinetic energy of the molecules themselves.

Hypothesis: I believe the egg will lose mass while submerged in the Karo Syrup because it doesn’t contain much water and when the egg is placed in water, I believe it will gain mass showing the process of Osmosis – where water will move through a semi-permeable membrane.

Materials & Method: Material used: 3 Eggs (1 used – 2 for backup) Vinegar Karo syrup (light) Water 3 containers to hold eggs Scale Towel Sink

I placed 3 eggs in a container and filled Vinegar and let sit for 24 hours. After 24 hours had passed, I

Cells have kinetic energy. This causes the molecules of the cell to move around and bump into each other. Diffusion is one result of this molecular movement. Diffusion is the random movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration. Osmosis is a special kind of diffusion where water moves through a selectively permeable membrane (a membrane that only allows certain molecules to diffuse though). Diffusion or osmosis occurs until dynamic equilibrium has been reached. This is the point where the concentrations in both areas are equal and no net movement will occur from one area to another.…

Diffusion and Osmosis are two concepts that go hand in hand with each other. Diffusion is simply described as the movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. In another words, the substance will move down its concentration gradient which is “the region along which the density of a chemical substance increases or decreases” (Campbell Biology pg. 132). If you understand the concept of diffusion then osmosis is a very simple process. It can be defined as the diffusion of water across a permeable membrane. Osmosis can be cellular or artificial, so even though we are creating artificial cells in this lab, it is still considered to be osmosis. During osmosis, a solvent is trying to get through a selectively permeable membrane to make the concentration of that solvent the same on both sides of the membrane. The rate of osmosis depends on the type of environment the cell is in. There are three different environments that a cell can find itself in, a hypertonic environment, a hypotonic environment, or an isotonic environment. The environment a cell is in will determine its tonicity which is “the ability of a surrounding solution to cause a cell to gain or lose…

When the experiment was finalized the vinegar solution enlarged the eggs mass. Before the vinegar solution it was 55.1 grams and after the solution it was 67.9 grams. The volume of the egg was also increased. At the beginning it was 50 mL after the solution it was 60 mL; it had a 10 mL difference. It is visible that a hypotonic solution was present. This rejects the hypothesis made. When the egg was placed in 150 mL of vinegar and left intact overnight the egg did sink to the bottom and remain that way, however, the mass was increased instead of keeping it the same, by approximately 13 grams. Furthermore, the volume was also increased it did not remain the same. By analyzing the data it can be determined that the water had a larger concentration and did not have to balance out with the vinegar. The vinegar acted in a peculiar way although it eroded the shell and took some weight off the water flowed inside the egg due to the low concentration of the vinegar.…

The purpose of this lab is to find out which osmotic environment the eggs are in while sitting in different liquids. There are three different types of environments: hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic. Hypotonic solution causes the cell to swell until it bursts. Hypertonic solution causes the cell to shrink or to lose weight. Isotonic solution doesn’t cause the egg to shrink or swell, it keeps the cell the same it’s just in a different environment.…
