This statement or topic can be debated forever, but it’s deep down in the core, where the answer lies, that egoism in fact is connected and corresponds to utilitarianism. An average person would not assume or even think for that matter that when you think of yourself, you would think or consider others too. This is true, when you are trying to make a decision for yourself of what or what not to do, it affects the people that surround you or that you care for and if that decision is a bad one it can hurt the people around you. It will come right back to you and affect you as well. Those feelings that you hurt will affect how you feel and then you will constantly think about yourself and what you have to do to make those people happy to make you happy again. However that is not always the case. For example, if a person is put into a life or death situation, some people may not just be considering themselves, they will be considering others and if they don’t help that person or do something in the situation, how will it affect them emotionally and mentally. Another example, would be if you see a biker on the side of the road that got hit by a car and is bleeding with a big wound in his leg and you are in your fancy prom dress; an egoist can think no I can’t help this person because I will ruin my dress and if I help I will be late to prom. However, that’s not how every single egoist thoughts are presents. Some egoistic people in that situation can think if I don’t help this person they are going to die, I let someone die and I won’t be able to live with myself.
Even if you put yourself first and make conscientious decisions about your life, does that make you selfish; does that make you an egoistic person? Personally, in some ways I think it does because the definition of egoism is about you so that question does match to the definition, however everyone always constantly thinks about how a situation will affect them or something in regards to themselves.
