Eight Puppies Poem Summary
Eight Puppies

Between the thirteenth and fifteenth day

The puppies opened their eyes.

Suddenly they saw the world, anxious with terror and joy.

They saw the belly of their mother,

Saw the door of their house,

saw a deluge of light,

saw flowering azaleas.

They saw more, they saw all,

The red, the black, the ash.

Scrambling up, pawing and clawing

More lively than squirrels.

They saw the eyes of their mother,

Heard my rasping cry and my laugh.

And I wished I were born with them.

Could it not be so another time?

To leap from a clump of banana plants

One morning of wonders—

A dog, a coyote, a dear;

To gaze with wide pupils,

To run, to stop, to run, to fall,

To whimper and whine and jump

The cuts on Little Red’s cheeks stung and dripped small drops of blood down her face. Suddenly she heard a door being opened, but she couldn’t see who it was because of the blindfold over her eyes. She heard a “Swoosh” and the sound of a blade hitting flesh. Then another. Then she felt a warm liquid spray onto either side of her.…

Fanning wrote the poem Child Carrier, which is one poem out of a set of poems, entitled Man Carrying A Corpse. I believe that this poem is about the main character, Man. He is trying to fit into a crowed elevator with a corpse draped over his shoulder. When he gets in the elevator a little girl reaches up and touches Corpse’s hand. The Man was startled that the little girl touched Corpse without any reservations. Then the little girl told Man not to worry as she readjusted the large load she was carrying under a blanket. I think that the little girl was also carrying a corpse of her own.…

In the poem “Sweethearts,” by Allen Branden he describes the feelings of a young couple who have to sneak out to find time to spend with each other. The line, “Through the pale statuary and falling leaves” (2) gives the poem a setting of being in a cemetery in the autumn. Their love is so strong that they never want to be apart. The speaker is a man who is telling a story about a relationship that he was in as a teenager; he is not speaking to anyone unparticular. Through diction, symbols and tone the author explains how young love can be confusing, misunderstood, and full of emotion.…

And so we came to those days when summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born. It was Saturday noon, just a few days before the start of school. Daddy, Mama, Doodle, and I were seated at the dining room table, having lunch. Suddenly from out in the yard came a strange croaking noise. Doodle stopped eating. "What's that?" He slipped out into the yard, and looked up into the bleeding tree. "It's a big red bird!"…

Every sight, smell, sound, feel. The agony of waiting in the emergency room as her father and sister struggled to explain what had happened. Their mother had suffered a stroke, a devastating one, which claimed three-fourths of her functioning brain. She didn't want to believe it. Sitting there in the chaotic waiting room, she reflected on how different that day had turned out from her expectations of it. How sudden it all was. And how tragic.…

It stayed calm. Then it looked like it was motioning to the other side of the lake and disappeared into the brush from where it came from. After a quick exchange of looks we decided to continue on in the direction the deer was pointing.…

The poem “Mothers” by Nikki Giovanni is about two states of mind. An adult dealing with the ups and downs of everyday life and a concerned child. This is shown by the use of opposite words. “Dark-light” and “pleasantries and unpleasantries.” Being a child, Nikki was trying to make sense of what was happening around her. She sees her mother sitting in a chair in a dark room upset her. Nikki is apparently a frightened child. The wetting of the bed confirms her fear. She wrote about and absent father, so her mother is the only protection she had. She is afraid to loose her hence the search of strength in her mother.…
