Eight Weeks of English Classes: Personal Experience
WRITER’S NOTEBOOK
WEEK1
This is my first week of ENG 105 and so far I’m nervous that how am I going to be able to balance my two classes with my work in the Marine Corps, this week it was ok keeping in mind my personal opinion about writing/reading, the reading for this week somewhat showed me what to expect for the 7 weeks left with this class and since this is an English class I’m sure there will be a lot of essays involved.
We had some reading to do for this week for an introduction to writing and the process about portfolios (I’ll see more of this by week 7) andmy experiences with writing and portfolio keeping is almost none. I have never wrote anything unless I needed to or I was told and even worse with keeping a portfolio so the whole process is all very new to me. I always try to learn and doing my best I think I’ll be ok in this class. We are also keeping a writer’s notebook and to be honest I did not know how to start one but I guess it has to be done hopefully it’ll be ok all the way until the end.
The other reading was an article “Body Ritual among the Nacirema” by Horace Miner, after reading the article, I realize that it was specifically referring to the American culture in a strange way like for example the latipso temple is a hospital, medicine men are doctors, laceration of the face is simply shaving, women baking heads in small ovens is simply going to the salon and putting their heads under the hair dryers and other things that you can relate to our culture.
Next week we’ll be writing our first essay and I’m a little worry about me being able to fill my teacher’s expectations and get good grades.
See you next week.

WEEK 2
This week my required readings were very helpful because it help me to understand about the reading and writing of essays and critical thinking when we are writing, also I had to write my first essay assignment that I had to picked from the three that I had in the required reading part.
Rough drafts are normally the

After reading the article “Body Ritual among the Nacirema”, I can’t help but notice blatantly obvious similarities between our culture and theirs. Their rituals, rites, and customs are bizarre in nature and seem to illustrate a nearly obsessive fascination with the human body. The main focus of their culture appears to be shaming people based on their appearance and forcing them to conform to the societal norms. Upon further reading, I noted that while the Nacirema put a high value on the upkeep of their bodies, they made it exorbitantly expensive to do so, even if a tribe member was dying of sickness and the supplies, or “potions”, were readily available to cure him/her. This seemed backwards. There are some aspects of the Nacirema culture…

The article Body Ritual among the Nacirema is about the characterizes of the Naciremas, a North American group of people. Their lives are dedicating to their charm-box in which is a major need for them to complete their rituals and everyday life. Each house has a charm-box or a treasure chess in these they place their charms and medicines and magical materials that they believe in. Their daily mores they do is that every day each member of the family enters the shrines room and bow their head before the charms box, then they go to the priest and conducts a ceremony to make the liquid referring to their holy water for their rituals pure. Nacirema, American spelled backward, is a satire paper attempting to force Americans to evaluate their culture and look at it in a different way. By using words that are obscure, atypical and abnormal to describe very common American practices, the paper offers a strange way of defining our culture. One instance in the paper was how Americans hold importance in oral hygiene and use tooth brushes and tooth paste to brush our teeth daily. The author describes this as a “mouth-rite” and a “revolting” daily body ritual. What we understand to be brushing our teeth is illustrated as “inserting a small bundle of hog hairs into the mouth, along with certain magical powders, and then moving the bundle in a highly formalized series of gestures” (Miner,…

"Body Ritual Among the Nacirema" was actually written about Americans. Horace Miner chose not to directly reveal this, in order to demonstrate people' ethnocentric tendencies. From the time we are born we learn the "norms" of our society and we then use those "norms" to judge other sociological groups. As I read about the Nacirema I couldn't help but think how odd their body rituals are, when in fact they are the very rituals…

Horace Miner’s point throughout the entire article of “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema” was to prove to us, Americans, that we are not superior to anyone else or any other culture, society, or religion. We are all the same, and we just to need to keep in the back of our minds that everyone does everything differently. Whether it is a dramatic difference, or barely noticeable, each person does everything different from the next person. Throughout this essay willbe examples on how Miner’s article went to prove how ethnocentric Americans through the use of sociological imagination.…

The Nacirema case study reminds us how cultural rituals were many years ago and how some of them are still existing today. The Nacirema tribe has many unconventional practices of how they live day to day. From the article “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema,” it is clear that they believe their bodies are not attractive and should not be presented in a promiscuous way. Professor Linton documented the North American Tribe who think their bodies as naturally disgusting. They perform daily magic rituals to their bodies to prevent it from being decayed or diseased in anyway. Some of the rituals use potions, charms and physical suffering.…

In the essay “Body Ritual Among the “Nacirema”, anthropologist Horace Miner describes a group of people known as the Nacirema, a little known tribe living in North America. The way in which he writes about the curious practices that this group performs, distances readers from the fact that the North American group described actually corresponds to modern day Americans of the mid 1950’s. The Nacirema’s cultural beliefs are deeply rooted in the perspective that the human body is prone to sickness and disfiguration. Consequently, a substantial part of their lives are spent on unusual rituals and customs to improve conditions of the body that are filled with magical components.…

"Body Rituals among the Nacirema" is a document written by Mr. Horace Miner. Miner was a graduate of the University of Chicago, with a degree in anthropology. Throughout his life, Miner was dedicated to his studies ranging in anthropology to sociology. He was very interested in the study of anthropology, but Miner disagreed with the way that other cultures were represented. He thought American anthropologists believed that the American culture was "normal" and, that the other studied cultures were misrepresented (Hoogland). Miner was convinced to prove otherwise. He wanted to prove to other anthropologists that to other cultures the American culture could be viewed as unusual.…

What a journey my writing has experience over the past seven weeks has been. I have grown as writer more in this class than I have previously. Writing has always been a challenge for me. Many people have heard of someone who just can’t get math, well that is me with writing. Back in high school there many times that an assignment did not get turned, not because I had not worked on it, but I could never get the ideas in my head to make sense when I wrote them on paper. I would get so frustrated that many ended up in the trash crumpled. For every assignment we have worked on I still get frustrated. What takes many, minutes to write and sound eloquent take me, hours to sound short and abrupt. But with each lesson we have gone through my…

Walking into room 115 in the HSS building my first day of second semester as a freshman I had no idea what to expect, little did I know, I was in for a big surprise. English 214 has been a rollercoaster with its ups and downs, but it has taught me so much more than what I have learned my previous years of writing all put together. This course has challenged my thoughts and forced me into putting much more effort than any other class has needed, but at the end of the day it is all worth it. From learning about having a strong ethos, good paragraph structure, including frosting, and revision, revision, revision, this has slowly shaped me into becoming a better writer by putting more thought into my writing instead of just rushing through it.…

As writers many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.…
