Most side effects occur from all of the forms of abuse. Signs and side effects that can be from any type are depression, sudden changes in alertness, and strained relationship or arguments between the abuser and the abused elder (MacConnell). Signals of physical abuse are bruises, pressure marks, broken bones, abrasions, and burns. Signs of neglect are bedsores, unattended medical needs, poor hygiene, and unusual weight loss. Emotional abuse can be harder to identify, but there are some signals, like belittling or arguments between someone who should be trusted (spouse, caretaker, family member), and the elder. All of these things are signs of an elder being abused, and should be reported (NCEA). If signs are seen on an elder, actions need to be done to get it taken care of. If it is an obvious emergency, call 911 first, but the Michigan Adult Protective Services has a hotline available if elder abuse is suspected: 855-444-3911 (Michigan.gov). NCEA started World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, or WEAAD, to try and inform people on Elder Abuse.
