This helps Eleanor acknowledge the poor trust between the two, Eleanor and Tina. The last quote which determines the trust between both characters is said by Eleanor and Tina. It is being said to understand that the relationship between Eleanor and Tina can still bond. At the time, Eleanor has ran away from her home and then notices Tina on the streets of their neighbourhood. For instance, “ ‘What’s wrong with you anyway?’ Tina asked. ‘Nothing.’ A pair of headlights stopped at the end of the block, Eleanor put her arm over her head. ‘Come on,’ Tina said in a voice Eleanor had never heard before― concerned. ‘You just need to stay out of his way until he cools off ’ Eleanor followed Tina up the driveway, crouching to get into the hazy, dark garage.”(282). Eleanor acknowledges that she can still trust Tina even though what happened between the two. Although, the language used by Tina was penurious to Eleanor, Tina is attempting to assist Eleanor in the quote. For instance, “ ‘She thought she was protecting us-it was a mistake.’ ‘Are you trying to get rid of me? Did you think you could get rid of me?...’It was a mistake,’her mother said gently. ‘She was trying to help.’ ‘You never call them here,” he said to Eleanor, his voice dying, his eyes wild. ‘Never again.’ ”(148). The language and also the tone used by the step-father, Richie is insulting and penurious in the quote. In the quote, it is acknowledging that Richie cannot trust Eleanor and so can’t Eleanor trust Richie. During the time in the second quote, the characters Eleanor, Richie and Sabrina are confabulating. This quote assists the readers to acknowledge the poor trust between the two. During the quote, Eleanor has just returned to her home from Park’s house and is questioned about where she has been. For example, “ ‘Where have you been?’ Richie said. ‘At a friend’s house.’ ‘What friend?’ ‘ I told you, honey.’ her mom said, stepping into the room, drying a pan. “Eleanor has a girlfriend in the neighbourhood. Lisa.’ ”(168). Richie’s language used reasonable however his tone was questionable. Richie and Eleanor have absolutely no trust between one another in this quote and in the duration of the entire novel. In the last quote, Eleanor is reading in her head regarding what she sees. Richie has understood why Eleanor has been going out after school to meet “Tina”.

For example, when Adelaine and her cousin Ronny throw a party using the money that Uncle Josh gave to Adelaine to buy her silence about the abuse, Adelaine wants to tell Ronny about where the money came from but decides not to. Just before Adelaine is about to tell Ronny about the money, she decides that “[she does not] want to tell her after all . . . [because] She had a big mouth, and anything [she] told her [she] might as well stand on a street corner and shout to the world” (293). Even though Adelaine and Ronny are family and have been friends since childhood, Adelaine does not trust Ronny enough to keep her secret about the sexual abuse. Likewise, Adelaine also does not trust her boyfriend Jimmy with her secret. For example, when Jimmy enters Adelaine’s house, he realizes what has been happening between her and her uncle Josh. When Adelaine is about to come down the stairs to see Jimmy, she sees him “sitting at the kitchen table with the present that [she had] meant for Uncle Josh, looking at the note. Without seeing [her], he [closes] the box, neatly [folds] the note, and [walks] out the door” (305). Adelaine never considers telling Jimmy her secret before he finds the gift she has left for Uncle Josh because she cannot bring herself to trust others. The sexual abuse Adelaine experiences in her childhood lead her to not trust others, including those closest to her such as Ronny and Jimmy. As Robinson shows through writing “Queen of the North” in a non-linear way, Adelaine remembers incidences of sexual abuse from her past that are a constant reminder of the disruption of her childhood and of the trust her put in Uncle Josh and he broke. Uncle Josh breaking Adelaine’s trust when she was a child has led her to become less trusting in the present, especially when it comes to her sexual…

A quote I found interesting was Claire’s response to The mom’s note : “ I’ve had to go for the radiation therapy and then work for a couple of hours, they couldn’t do without me. I think it’s very unfair to say I haven’t been here when you’ve needed me. Mom” Claire’s response was “ I’m staying the night at Emma’s again”. This quote shows the ignorance and selfishness that Claire is displaying, by not making an effort to be at least respectful towards the mother.…

When Linda first comes out in the play, she is described as a wife who is used to accepting her husband's behavior and his dreams and sudden mood swings. In one paragraph on pg. 12, even before she enters the play, the reader has the impression that maybe she is already a victim. As she talks to the disappointed Willy about his day, Miller indicates with stage directions that Linda is careful with her actions and words, but in a supportive way. It seems that she might be frightened by him or at the fact that Willy is fragile. We see this on pg. 13 in stage directions such as "very carefully, delicately", "helpfully", and even Linda helps Willy take off his shoes. Linda also describes her son Biff, as crestfallen and explains to Willy that their son is trying to find himself (pg. 15, "He's crestfallen...if he finds himself, then you'll both be happier"). Throughout the beginning, Linda only wants to ease family tensions without choosing sides. She is thought of as caring and perhaps innocent.…

The text states, “I’m afraid I will be caught. I’m afraid Julie is dead. But of all the things I’m afraid of, there’s nothing that frightens me so much as the likelihood-the near certainty- that Julie is a prisoner of the Ormaie Gestapo” (228). This quote shows that Maddie had to stay determined while being apart from Maddie because of how hard it was on her. She was going through many things at once but also had to worry about Julie. The quote says, “I’m afraid Julie is dead”. This shows how Maddie was always worrying about Julie but she had to stay determined for the both of them so that she would not be caught. This quote proves how Maddie had to stay strong and determined through hard times even though she was afraid for both her and Julie’s life. The girls went through difficult times while they were apart but made it…

Throughout the book, Olive Kitteridge, Elizabeth Strout uses diction and imagery to establish the overall themes. Although when the reader reads this book they discern the main themes, close reading helps them to better understand the themes’ effect on the entire book. The paragraph after the first page break on page 40 strongly illustrates this. The main theme emphasized in this paragraph is loss, especially the loss of hope. Strout illustrates the many sides of depression and how each person who deals with mental illness has many conflicting factors in their life. In this paragraph one character, Patty, decides to pick some flowers but they are located on the side of a cliff with a dangerous path. Throughout this section there are conflicting…

Two books, two different stories, both delving into the pressure put on youths and how young adults grow and change with the scrutiny of society and those close to them. This perfectly describes Carry On and Fangirl, two coming of age novels written by Rainbow Rowell. Carry On and Fangirl have a unique connection with each other. Fangirl’s main character writes fanfiction about Simon Snow and his friends from a book that is fictional to her. Carry On is about Simon Snow and his friends, but in Carry On, they are not fictional. These books are similar in relation to several of their characters, but their depictions of those characters (Simon Snow, Agatha Wellbelove, Penelope Bunce, Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch) is drastically unalike.…

In a well lit room that was necessary to allow the 72 Goga Black Box camera to adjust focus on a 23-year old Frank Sinatra's comfortably calm appearance, a picture is captured in Bergen, County jail. The viewer can see a scrawny Jersey boy with eyes so blue that regardless of the black and white overlay, the viewer's’ own eyes are drawn to his; a gaze so calm there is feeling as if one is standing in front of him waiting for him to move his crooked mouth. The absence of color creates even greater strength in contrast between the young man's loosely combed black hair where one piece frames his face, and the flawlessness of his pale complexion. Curiously, the viewer is eager to know the man behind this black and white mugshot. Fortunately, because of Sinatras daughter Tina, along with other trusty lawyers…
