    Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but only recently have people been able to harness this resource and turn it into energy. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are one such advancement made in the effort to turn hydrogen gas into electricity. Fuel cells in the car are used to convert hydrogen into an electrical current, and thus power the vehicle. Fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into water while producing electricity. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are also quiet (similar to an electric vehicle), very energy efficient, have zero emissions and have equivalent range and performance to their gasoline counterparts. However, these types of cars still haven’t gained popularity despite these advantages. This is because more research still needs to go into this new emerging technology. Advancements still needed to be made in order for FCVs (Fuel Cell Vehicles) to be successful and competitive alternatives for consumers. Things such as onboard hydrogen storage, fuel cell durability and reliability, readily available refueling stations, and of course vehicle cost need to be addressed.1 In the long run however, the advantages of Fuel Cell Vehicles will outweigh the costs. Thus, the government should invest more into the development of FCVs because they are environmentally friendly, the source of energy to power them (hydrogen) will sustain us into perpetuity, and further advancements in this field will have many additional applications pertaining to energy consumption.…

    In 1996, one car stood out above the rest. With its zero emissions and sporty, sleek design, the General Motors EV-1 was unstoppable. This car ran entirely without gas or oil of any kind. It ran only on electric power which made it very eco-friendly. It was built to comply with California’s zero emissions vehicle mandate that stated if auto makers wanted to sell cars in California some of those cars would have to be no exhaust. General Motors started leasing them publicly in 1997. All 660 available for lease, got leased. This car was the answer to California’s smog problem and would soon be able to help stop global warming and more of our planets environmental problems.     Today our lives are thought to be in danger due to global warming. Global warming is defined as a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. Thought to be a big contribution to global warming are the emissions that come from the exhaust of our cars. Electric vehicles do not have tailpipes that exhaust fumes to pollute so they are the logically thought of the cleaner form of transportation. Imagine if everyone suddenly had electric vehicles, would we be able to provide enough energy to power them all?     General motors is a relevant social group because they are the ones who manufactured and sold the EV1. They originally decided to abide by the state’s law about selling a certain percentage of electric vehicles, but soon after decided to face the consequences of not selling them. They installed poor quality batteries in order to deter consumers even more and argued that they could not make money off of the electric vehicle. GM did not properly, if at all, advertise for their electric vehicle, and when consumers came to them regarding the electric vehicle, the limitations of this vehicle were exaggerated in order to deter them from purchasing or leasing. General Motors took back all EV1s after their leases were up, not allowing the leasee to renew their lease, and crushed all of the remaining EV1s.…

    Electric car was around in 1960s. During the energy crisis in 1970s and 1980s electric cars started disappearing. In 1990s first electric car EV1 from a company named General Motors became popular in California simply because it was more environmental-friendly while it was affordable. A Zero-emissions vehicle mandate require companies to offer electric cars if they wanted to continue selling gasoline vehicles. The oil industries were fighting against the electric cars. Less people wanted to use it in that they wanted to pay less for electric cars which were limited. California dropped the mandate after getting sued by auto-makers. Drivers protested to try to save electric cars. There was almost no demand for GM’s electric cars. In a survey, 4000 said they would drive an electric car but at the end it narrowed down to only 50. GM started taking back EV1s from the drivers to be crushed and recycled. The last consumer EV1 was given up by its driver in 2004. Someone put her last effort to put EV1 back to the road; within 48 hours, 80 people signed up to get an EV1 while GM only had 72 cars. There were several suspects about the situation with GM. GM stated that there was no demand in the market for those electric cars, but several interviews with consumers showed that people wanted those electric cars. Another suspect was batteries. The batteries that EV1s had at the time were acid batteries with 60 miles of range. Average driving distance of Americans was less than 30 miles per day which meant EV1s would actually satisfy consumers. The EV1s made later which was the second generation came with better batteries that lasted around 100 miles.     Electric cars cost, not so bad. The cost for electric cars may seem like a lot, but it's not. First of all, after tax credits, electric cars only cost about $20,00 which isn't a lot for car that's saving the environment. The batteries do cost a lot to replace, but they last a long time, up to ten years! Also, with an electric car there is no need for gasoline. For a full charge on for an electric car, it only costs $2.64, while the typical full tank of gasoline costs around $50. It has been shown that Americans spend from $4,000-$7,000 yearly on gasoline. One of the disadvantages is that people may have to install a charging system at home. A charging system only costs a little over a thousand dollars, but people won't be burning fossil fuels,…
