The goal of this experiment is to build a simple electric motor and observe how it works. I will attempt to make it spin evenly by attaching it to a battery via jumper cables. The independent variable is the battery charge (1.5 V) and the dependent variable is how fast the motor spins. The lab doesn’t have multiple experiments for us to test this but I would hypothesize that the two variables would have a positive correlation: higher voltage, faster spin.

I built my tiny motor out of magnet wire, a magnet, two paper clips, a 1.5 V battery, and two push pins. I curled the magnet wire around the battery so that it was in a coil shape, then pulled the ends out so that it had tails. Then, I used sandpaper to manipulate the clear coating on the ends of the magnetic wire. The paperclips were bent so that they supported the tails of the magnetic wire, or “armature arms”. I had to use small pliers, an extra material, to accomplish this. I used an old textbook as a support base to conduct the rest of the experiment with. The paperclip stands were fastened to the base with the two push pins.

Next, I put the magnet directly under the coil, and attached two jumper cables to each end of the battery holder, with the other ends of the jumper cables attached to the armature arm supports. I gave the “motor” an initial spin to see if it worked, and it actually started spinning on its own a bit. The paperclips were a little lopsided so it only went a few turns though. I was unable to get it to run in reverse.

I would say that my results conform to modern theories of physics and that my results support my prediction in that I did indeed get my motor to work, even if it was less than ten seconds. I didn’t conduct the experiment with multiple batteries so I can’t see if a higher voltage would have caused it to spin faster though. For all the time building it I wish it would have worked out better though… Honestly, I probably just messed up the construction

    First, our group drilled two shallow holes on each of the short ends of the mousetrap about ½ inch in from each end. Then, we screwed in the eye hooks, one into each hole, making sure the eye hooks were leveled by placing each short end of the mousetrap against a hard cover book. Secondly, we used wire cutters to cut the square snap bar where it attaches to the middle bar to the right of the mouse. That step allowed there to be greater leverage and greater potential energy when launching the vehicle.     The first thing that you must do is to drop a marble inside the pulley machine. When the marble has dropped into the pulley, the side of the pulley with more force will go down and the one with the least weight will go up. The pully starts out with potential energy, however it changes to kinetic energy because of the force of the marble. The weight of the marble makes the pulley change its position. When the side with more force of the pulley fell towards the ground, it tapped the wheel and axel, and the wheel and axle began spinning. The wheel and axel’s spinning gently triggers the toy car in potential energy to travel down the inclined plane and change into kinetic energy. As quickly as the car fell, it stopped right in front of the lever. The lever has potential energy and it is there to prevent the car from going on and on. When the car stops at the lever, the car pushes the lever with a little bit of force, which triggers the marble to roll out into our second pulley. Our second pulley works similarly to our first pulley. The input force is where the marble falls in and the output force is when the other bucket falls down because of the movement. In this last stage, where the food comes out, the pulley with the heavier weight in it goes down about evenly to the food side of the bucket. One of the biggest things that we had to overcome was the coordination between ourselves. We had to figure out a timing and coordination between the timer and the person starting the car and also the person who was placing the sugar packets.     We did a fan cart for our physics class the other day. To set up the lab first, we measured the effect of the mass of the fan cart on the acceleration of the cart. The mass of the fan cart was the independent variable and acceleration was the dependent variable. We kept the speed of the cart on medium, and calculated the acceleration and motion. As a result, we had figured out that the bigger the mass the slower the acceleration, as we all should have known. To calculate this we used the second law of Newton (F=ma). For the first experiment we got .233 (m/s/s) with a percent error of 76%. The relationship for the first experiment was inverse because the acceleration was decreasing every time the weight (mass) increased. In the second experiment we got 3.52 (m/s/s) with a percent error of 56.4%. For this experiment the relationship was linear because the mass was increased for each trial. Some errors that could have taken place would be, cart alignment, track damaged, placement of the motion sensor. These can affect the data because it will give a greater percentage error.     This experiment was conducted in order to test our knowledge of simple machines, and how we are able to pair them together to successfully attack a simple task. We failed miserably. Whilst we have a mild understanding of the six simple machines and their purposes, our delivery wasn’t as effective as we had hoped it would be. The overall process was full of trials and tribulations. We had to witness the forces that could possibly work against our machine, such as air resistance.     The cars we will test will be made of common and inexpensive materials. The design of the cars will consist of simple wheel and axel setups and a lever; two simple machines that can be used to cause forward movement.
