Electrical Protection
The ‘Hand Book’ covers the Code of Practice in Protection Circuitry including standard lead and device numbers, mode of connections at terminal strips, colour codes in multicore cables, Dos and Donts in execution. Also principles of various protective relays and schemes including special protection schemes like differential, restricted, directional and distance relays are explained with sketches. The norms of protection of generators, transformers, lines & Capacitor Banks are also given. The procedures of testing switchgear, instrument transformers and relays are explained in detail. The close and trip, indication and alarm circuits for variety of Circuit breakers indicating ferrule numbers are also included. All relevant information and circuit diagrams necessary for trouble shooting are also given.

We have more than 25 years experience, each in protective relaying and included a lot of information by way of original contribution apart from collection of useful information from a large number of reference books, manuals of manufacturers, etc. and it is hoped that this Hand Book will serve as a useful guide for all practicing Engineers.

We thank Sri B.Babu, Special Officer (Protection), Sri Vivekananda and Sri Sachidanandam, Divisional Engineers, APGENCO, Sri M.Gopal Rao, Chief Engineer, Sri L.M.Sastry and Sri J.Dakshina Murthy, Superintending Engineers, APTRANSCO for their valuable advise in preparation of this book. We also thank Sarvasri G. Seshagiri Rao, Divisional Engineer, M.Jagan Mohan Rao, Assistant Divisional Engineer, K.Srinivasa Rao, V.Venkateswarlu and Mrs.Shilpa, Assistant Engineers of APTRANSCO, Sri V.R.Rao and Sri Diganta of PGCIL for patiently going through the Hand Book and for their valuable suggestions in bringing out this Book. We specially thank Dr.Bhuvanaika Rao, APGENCO for his contribution of the chapter on Excitation & Voltage Control. Our special thanks to Sri M. Sreenivasa Reddy and Sri A.Bhaskar J.P.Os who has

and resistance to flame. The use of shielded cables in security systems provides some protection from power frequency and radio frequency interference, reducing the number of false alarms being generated. The best practice is to keep data or signal cables physically separated by at least 3 inches (75mm) from 'heavy' power circuits which are in parallel.…

Liberalization of electricity markets brings about important changes in the working environment of power utilities. The power utilities are facing new challenges everyday pertaining to the reliability of power system. It means reliability demands on distribution networks are increasing. To meet this demand in proper way, it is necessary to avoid shutdowns/breakdowns of the networks. To maintain the reliability demand of utilities, it is important to do right things at .right place at right time. As a result the network operators have to concentrate more on asset management to reduce the costs, to postpone the investment, to optimize technical management…

There are things you need to consider when deciding on what type of system protection you are going to use. The things you need to consider are reliability, selectivity, speed, simplicity, and economics. Reliability consists of assurance that the protection system that is in place will operate correctly. Selectivity consists of ensuring that the amount of the service area disturbed is kept to a minimum. The speed of the system must minimize the duration of the fault and also minimize the amount of damage that may occur to the system. The use of the minimal amount of equipment to achieve the type of protection you want is also important. This will keep things less complicated and also relates to the last thing to consider in a protection system which is cost. You want the maximum amount of protection but at a minimal cost. All of these factors help build a cost effective and reliable protection system that will protect our infrastructure.…

A type of relay that can handle the high power required to directly control an electric motor or other loads is called a contactor. Solid-state relays control power circuits with no moving parts, instead using a semiconductor device to perform switching. Relays with calibrated operating characteristics and sometimes multiple operating coils are used to protect electrical circuits from overload or faults; in modern electric power systems these functions are performed by digital instruments still called "protective relays".…

A Buchholz relay is a gas and oil operated device installed in the pipework between the top of the transformer main tank and the conservator. A second relay is sometimes used for the tapchanger selector chamber. The function of the relay is to detect an abnormal condition within the tank and send an alarm or trip signal. Under normal conditions the relay is completely full of oil. Operation occurs when floats are displaced by an accumulation of gas, or a flap is moved by a surge of oil. Almost all large oil-filled transformers are equipped with a Buchholz relay, first developed by Max Buchholz in 1921.…
