To prevent harm from being done, the U.S. Department of of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, and Bureau of Justice Assistance enacted several laws to protect the people. One of these is titled, Electronic Communications Privacy Act, commonly known as ECPA of 1986. According to Julia Mckinnell in the article “Control, Alt, Erase” she talks about how social networking has become a problem for teenagers, and how parents can serve as “a role model” by helping and making sure that their kids personal information is safe. Mckinnell gives important reasons why parents should be aware of the consequences that social networks can have on their children. Posting a message, a tweet, or a photo online can give away the location and time it was posted. This data can be used to identify, or to gather personal information. For example, Tech companies gather personal data onto teenager's social media accounts for profit (Mckinnell). Also, jobs might look to gather data about certain individuals to know who they hire. Therefore, it's important for parents to teach their children risks involving sharing personal information to the public.…

One type of communication is social networking. This is things like Facebook and Twitter (the two probably used the most by the widest variety of people). The thing about Facebook in particular is that, although there is an age limit (of 13) there is no way of stopping a 12 year old from pretending they are a year older, they only have to click 1999 instead of 2000. Facebook is not all that dangerous as such when it comes to privacy, people on it just have to have the common sense to only add or accept friend requests of people that they know. Even children who are about nine years old have the sense for that and even if they didn’t, a parent would have the initiative to check up on their child to make sure they are using the internet safely and not talking to people they don’t know. However, chat rooms now have a system where you don’t have to register to use it, like Omegle. This can be seen as dangerous as if someone of a young age opens up Omegle, all you have to do to use the webcam chat rooms is type in your location and an interest. This can be seen to attract the wrong attention to the younger generation, also what is shown on the rooms isn’t monitored, and so many use it for personal pleasure basis. This is why you have parental control on your laptops so that sites like these are accessible. Obviously,…

With the internet changing constantly every day the United States Congress are implementing many legislative acts to address concerns with the usage of different kinds of technology. There are many advances in information technology that resulted in ethical issues such as the creation of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) which was put into law in the year of 2000 by Congress. The main purpose of the act is to protect children from the dangers that the internet has ("Federal Communications Commission", n.d.).…

Children are our society’s most valuable and fragile resources. It is our responsibility as parents, adults, and caregivers to provide our children with as many safeguards to protect them from physical and virtual dangers. Children are spending more and more time on the internet and without the proper protection and supervision they can be exposed to indecent or harmful material or predators that seek to harm them. “What children are encountering on the Internet, particularly in terms of indecent or otherwise unsuitable material or contacts with strangers who intend to do them harm, is an issue of major concern.” (Smith, 2001).
