Electronic Medical Record Speech Hi, my name is Stephanie Heydon, and I am from the company, Sunrise Systems and Solutions. An electronic medical record, also referred to as an EMR, is a system that stores all the physician reports, surgical procedures, and any clinical information that is performed on a patient. An EMR is intended to keep track of a patient’s health and medical history in an electronic format making it easier for doctors to access, but also keeps the records secure.
The major benefits of an EMR are that office personnel will have access to a patient’s health information immediately.
Retrieving a patient’s health information right away is very important in an emergency situation. Instead of office personnel looking for the patients file and sorting through several files, the office personnel can obtain the necessary information quickly if the records are stored electronically. Using EMRs will also allow the physicians to order medications, tests, or any other services needed, which can be implemented by the office staff. EMRs will also provide access to medical research, thereby helping doctors make medical decisions now and in the future. The EMR system can also provide medical alerts and reminders to the staff. This reminder will allow the staff to make sure patients are being scheduled for regular checkups. The alerts are also able to identify any patient safety issues, like drug allergies and drug interactions. EMR’s are also able to provide a secure communication between the physicians and staff members. This system will provide support for patients about health topics along with instructions on how to prepare for common medical tests. The practice management program otherwise known as PMP is another important part of a medical office.
The PMP has a computerized scheduling feature used to schedule patient appointments. The program has a feature which will search for an available time for a doctor where the next appointment can be entered. The appointments for the day can then be printed allowing the staff to have medical records ready when the patient checks in. The PMP is used not only to record the patient information but also create and transmit electronic claims, receive electronic payments, bill patients, create financial reports, and collect on past due accounts. Medical offices just like any other business need to get paid to continue servicing their patients. The PMP assists with receiving insurance payments without a long delay because claims are generated and then can be sent directly to a clearinghouse or health plan. Claims sent to a clearinghouse will check the claims accuracy, if anything needs to be corrected the claim will be sent back to the medical office. The claim will need to be corrected before being processed. The PMP can also be used to post payments to the patient’s accounts once received by a remittance

As you can see an EMR and PMP work together and can be very beneficial to an office. Using the EMR software will allow multiple members of the medical office staff to retrieve electronically stored files at the same time. Files and folders are no longer necessary to store medical information. This will save time because the files will not be misplaced and save space since everything can be found within the PMP. Physicians will be able to access any medical records as needed, which continue to keep the office running smoothly and save time. The PMP will assist with generating insurance claims, which will also help speed up the payments from the insurance companies.
