Elementary School PBIS Research
Unfortunately, many schools have disruptive students. Kicking them out of the classrooms, school detention or suspension is not the solution. Teachers should try to find new ways to get these disruptive students involved in quality learning. They need to learn how to handle behavior problems that might occur in the classrooms. PBIS (positive behavioral interventions supports) is an approach that is grounded in research regarding behavior in the context of the settings in which it occurs. There is a need of these types of supports in elementary classrooms, in particular Sprague Elementary school, to eliminate behavior problems. My paper will examine the positive effects of implementation of PBIS in Sprague Elementary School, regarding the quality of this implementation, and students’ outcomes such as students’ achievements, students’ behaviors, suspensions, or referrals. Reviewing the existing research will help me to define what PBIS means, why elementary schools use this practice, and how the implementation of this practice improves students’ behaviors and students’ …show more content…
Thirty-two elementary schools in a large urban school district were randomly assigned to an initial training cohort or a wait-list control group. Results suggested that SCS training positively affected school policies and student behavior. Surveys administered after the commencement of SCS training found large improvements in staff perceptions of school behavior policies and student behavior at schools receiving SCS training that were not observed at wait-list schools. Similarly, we observed reductions in student suspensions at schools implementing SCS that were not observed at control schools. The observed improvements persisted through the second year of trainings, and once the wait-list control schools commenced SCS training, they experienced similar improvements in school policies and student behavior.     School institutions simply cannot tolerate misbehavior by students. It is the school’s responsibility to maintain a safe, and controlled learning environment for everyone within the school institutions. Students truly cannot learn and teachers cannot teach amongst disruption and chaos. This is no controversy.     Although many claim that the zero tolerance disciplinary policies violate the constitutional rights of students, U.S. courts remain submissive toward the jurisdiction schools have to enforce disciplinary action (Aull IV).     The school-to-prison pipeline theory “suggests that early involvement in school discipline is a clear predictor of future problems” (p. 7) with the justice system (Office of the State Superintendent of Education, 2013). The most common practice associated with this theory is zero-tolerance policies that are implemented nationwide in schools.     Rather than promoting a safe environment of learning, and opportunity, schools have made it almost impossible to tell the difference between a school yard and a jail yard. Due to “zero tolerance” policies, police presents, and relying on suspensions and expulsions for minor infractions, students are missing out of their education. There once was time when disciplinary issues could be resolved by school administrators, but now students are either suspended or expelled on the spot. Students who have never been suspended or expelled are at less of a risk for incarceration than those that have been. There are approximately 3.3 million suspensions and over 100,000 expulsions each year. Zero tolerance policies were first adopted in the mid 1990s, since then the rates have been on a constant climb. Even though, the rates of school violence has been declining, suspension and expulsion rates are still rising. Zero tolerance policies have especially affected elementary and middle school children. “Seven of every thousand pre-schoolers are expelled from preschool programs, over three times the rate of expulsions in grades K-12” according to SentencingProject.org.
