Elephant Helping Trunk
Did you know that elephants are one of the smartest species on earth? According to the articles “Elephants Can Lend a Helping Trunk” by Virginia Morell, "Elephants Know When They Need a Helping Trunk in a Cooperative Task” by Joshua M. Plotnik, and the video “Elephants Show Cooperation” presented by Discovery News, a recent experiment done by a team of scientists in Thailand proved that this statement is indeed true. They determined this through an experiment that tested Asian elephants’ cooperative skills. While both the articles and video discuss an experiment involving elephants, each focuses on different aspects of the information. The article, “Elephants Can Lend a Helping Trunk” by Virginia Morell, concentrates more on the behavior of elephants. In the article, there are many studies and references included. For instance, the text …show more content…
Plotnik, focuses on the procedure of the experiment, and technicalities and building behind the experiment. The passage is based on many numerical references and logic. For example, in the first paragraph the author describes how the table apparatus was built, writing, “The table apparatus was comprised of two pieces of plywood painted and bolted to a rectangular PVC pipe frame 3.3 m wide and 1.2 m deep” (Plotnik). This highlights how the passage is written more about the science involved in building the experiment. Additionally, Plotnik included a graph showing the release intervals and percentages of success of each of the elephants. The inclusion of the graph illustrates how Plotnik chose to focus more on the procedure of the experiment and present his information more formally. The passage from “Elephants Know When They Need a Helping Trunk in a Cooperative Task” highlights the creation of the experiment rather than focusing on the behavior of the elephants even though all three works are based off the same

As Martin Buber once said, “an animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language”. As the years go by, numerous animals are becoming extinct by man’s lack of compassion. They used to roam freely, without fear, in the wild, although; with rising population, the wilderness is no longer their home. Therefore, the animals are forced to share their land with uncompassionate humans. One example is the Borneo Pygmy Elephant found in Southeast Asia. Their thriving population has diminished to less than 1,500 in the past years. An analysis of the endangered Borneo Pygmy Elephant shows their characteristics and habitat, what is threatening them, and how they can be saved.…

In the first passage, “Elephants Can Lend a Helping Trunk,” by Virginia Morell, Virginia used information to inform you about what scientists are finding out about elephants. Some of the information she provided was, “The study ‘adds to the growing body of evidence that elephants show some impressive cognitive abilities.’” This excerpt can help relate to the author's purpose of wanting to inform you about these elephants and tell you about their newly-found intelligence. The truth is, it is summer and I am desperate for a distraction away from my recent obsession with Grey’s Anatomy reruns fueled by Netflix’s instant queue. So I purchased the book and slowly began retreating from my computer screen that stole 42 minutes of my day as I sat captivated by Dr. Owen Hunt’s passionate kissing. Moreover, my favorite animals are elephants, so from the title I was intrigued.…

On average, an elephant can hear another elephant’s call at 4 km (2.5 mi.) away. Under ideal conditions, their range of hearing can be increased to 10 km (6.2…
