The first story, in the eleventh letter, seemed more authentic and real than the second story. I think the first story fits more into the society we live in today. They were looking out for themselves when it came to growing and harvesting their crops. The farmers grew only enough crops to feed him because they did not feel the need to go out of their way to grow additional crops. This is reasonable because it is not their responsibility to feed the rest of the tribe when others are capable of growing their own crops. I personally agree with their way of thinking. Why should I go out of my way for others that are not doing the same for me? I believe the only “responsibility” that I have to others to be a decent person and show basic respect for people. Other than that I do not owe anyone anything and nobody owes me anything. The farmers became selfish once the drought hit. When the people living in the lower lands refused to give crops to the people living in the higher lands it showed that the truly did not care about the others.
