Elizabeth And Abigail Williams: The Salem Witch Trials
In January 1692, 9 years old Elizabeth Parris, and a 11 year old Abigail Williams began exhibiting strange behaviour. Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel Parris, an ordained minister and Abigail was the niece. The two started making odd sounds, and screaming. Contorting their bodies and throwing objects. Elizabeth and Abigail said that an individual being was biting and pinching them. An 11 year old girl named, Ann Putnam and other girls in Salem began acting similarly to Elizabeth and Abigail. Their behaviour was attributed to supernatural causes according to a doctor diagnosis. There was only one doctor in Salem Village and he can only read and cannot write. In February 9, 1692 the girls accused 3 women for causing their bizarre outburst.
Jonathan Corwin and Jonathan Hathorn tell the girls to tell the people who are disturbing them. Out of the 3 women that Elizabeth and Abigail accused, 2 women, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne were innocent villagers and eventually die as the result of the trials. However, the other woman named Tituba, she was the slave of the Parris family. Unlike the 2 accused women, Tituba admitted to afflicting the girls. Tituba said “ The devil came to me and bid me serve him.” Tituba said she saw vision of eerie animal, including red cats, yellow birds, and black dogs. Tituba mentioned that other witches were also working on harming the Puritans in Salem. With this startling confessions the trials and accusations vaulted forward giving them a purpose and mission. Tituba was also very accommodating to the judges and claimed to go blind at one moment. Saying that it was the sign of the devil punishing her for speaking so openly about him. She spent 1 year and 3 months in jail and tituba was not very indicted and was the very last of the accused to be released.
