Unsung Hero Assignment

The American Revolution was a turning point in history for America. It was a revolt, expressed by thousands of Americans who wanted to break from the tyranny, which was Great Britain. The fight ensured us independence and basic human rights, which we now have today. But it wouldn’t have existed if it weren’t for the people sacrificing lives for their country. One of those heroic people was Elizabeth Hagar, a strong and capable woman who was an expert with machinery and medicine, who had received almost no recognition for her aid to the American Revolution. Born in Boston, 1750, Elizabeth’s parents had little money to support themselves and died by the time she was nine years old. As an orphan, Boston customs made her a “bound girl”, which meant she had to live with a family but assist them in return by being their servant. She had a strong knowledge about constructing tools and machinery and could make anything out of iron and wood. Even though she was skilled at making things with her hands she knew about the world around her also since during her childhood years she received some type of education. Her abilities soon became well known around Boston and she even got the nickname “Handsy Betsy” because her hands were a miracle and eventually would be working in the American Revolution. Even though she was abandoned at only nine years old and was migrating home to home for shelter and food, she still managed to earn a good future and learn life skills. She was able to take on life at it’s hardest at an early age which proves she was able to handle anything and that is one of the things that makes her a
