Take present-day celebrities such as Kim Kardashian for instance. She lives in a lavish house rumored to have cost upwards of twenty million dollars, has an estimated worth of around $45M, and has her own boutique shop and clothing line (Bio), It is clearly evident that Kim Kardashian does not need to necessarily live such an extravagant lifestyle in order to survive and be content. It is safe to say that majority of her possessions are of sentimental value or help to prove her high societal status. Eigner states his “desire to grab for the gaudy bubble that has been largely sated” and that is “is an attitude I share with the very wealthy”. The rich, however, know they are well-off and have anything they could ever wish for right at their fingertips. In addition, celebrities and other famous people such as Kim Kardashian hold onto so many expensive items that realistically have no practical…
I am Miranda Baker, however I’m like no one. I have a hard time relating to anyone, I’m quite a unique person. If I had to choose a character to relate to, I would relate to Doodle’s older brother from The Scarlet Ibis. I am alike this character because I blame myself for things that really aren’t my fault, I always push my brothers to push themselves and to go on past their abilities, mentally and physically, and I go with my brother everywhere and spend a lot of time with him. In all of these ways I am alike Doodle’s older brother, however I’m unlike him in many way as well.…
In “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, directed by Howard Hawks, Anita Loos uses the vapidity of her main female character Lorelei Lee as a satirical reflection of the shallowness of the men which surround her. Specifically, Lorelei is portrayed as being superficially focused on material wealth, while the men who want her are represented as being equally superficial in their interest in her physical beauty. In a broader sense, Loos used the background of upper-class America in the Jazz Age as an object of ridicule. The concept of the ‘gold-digger’ was manifested in the character of the blonde Lorelei Lee which gives insight in how blonde women were perceived during that time period. Nothing concerned her as much as money and diamonds and that shows that othe than being extremely seductive, blondes are nothing but materialistic.…
At the age of ten, most children are dependent on their parents for everything in their lives needing a great deal of attention and care. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons' use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons' own experiences as a young girl.…

First, when Ellen visits Mavis’s family, she has grown more aware of racism but is still ignorant and fails to see that even though they have nothing physically they have everything emotionally. Mavis’s family was everything that Ellen wanted, but because they were black, the thought that they could take Ellen in, never crossed her mind. Ellen begins to eavesdrop on the ‘colored house’ so she can form a list of what she wants her family to be like. While she is watching Mavis’s family, she decides she wants ‘one of those’. Ellen thinks, “I had not figured out how to go about getting one but I had a feeling it could be got” (67). She knows that she wants a family like Mavis’s, one that is caring and one whose members love each other. However Ellen just doesn’t understand that money doesn’t buy love and happiness. Then Ellen continues saying, “I want one white with a little more money” (67). All the black families she knows are poor, but so happy. The only happy white family Ellen knows is Roy and Julia. Yet Ellen still seems to insist on a white family when…
Through history women have fought for equal rights and freedom. This tension is derived from men; society, in general; and within a woman herself. In the nineteenth century, women in literature were often portrayed as submissive to men. Literature of this period often characterized women as oppressed by society, as well as by the male influences in their lives. This era is especially interesting because it is a time in modern society when women were still treated as second-class citizens. Two interesting short stories, "Hills like White Elephants" and "The Yellow Wallpaper" focus on a woman's plight near the turn of the nineteenth century. Both authors, Hemmingway and Gilman, leave an open end to the stories and allow readers to create their own ending, in turn causing them to take part in the action while reading. These stories require more effort from the reader, but seem to turn out differently for every reader making them a bit more interesting.…

Children are, by nature, incredibly sensitive creatures. They can sense almost any emotion an adult might feel just by observing a particular person's body language and facial expressions. Such is the case with the youthful Pearl from the novel The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorn. As the daughter of the adulteress Hester Prynne, the townspeople view Pearl as a demon in an angel's clothing; as an imp who not only knows exactly what the letter "A" signifies on the breast of her mother, but as the demon who placed it there as well. They also believe Pearl uses this information against Hester by constantly mentioning the letter in order to make Hester extremely uncomfortable. This is not true.<br><br>" Nay, Mother, I have told all I know,' said Pearl more seriously than she was wont to speak 'But in good earnest now, Mother dear, what does this scarlet letter mean? -and why dost thou wear it on thy bosom? -and why does the minister keep his hand over his heart?' She took her mother's hand in both her own, and gazed into her eyes with an earnestness that was seldom seen in her wild and capricious character" (Hawthorne 175). <br><br>This dialogue does not seem to be the words of a demon, but a child who is utterly curious about what the letter on her mother's bosom means. One must not underestimate Pearl's intelligence though. In fact, Pearl is not the demon many consider her to be; instead she is intelligent and sensitive towards her surroundings and can thus understand much about the scarlet letter her mother wears. <br><br>"The neighboring townspeople had given out that poor little Pearl was a demon offspring; such as, ever since old Catholic times, had occasionally been seen on earth, through the agency of their of their mother's sin, and to promote some foul and wicked purpose" (Hawthorne 95-96). From this statement and many others similar to it throughout the novel, many readers are given the impression that Pearl is a possessed child. Before any type of…
PearlHester’s illegitimate daughter. Pearl is a young girl with a moody, mischievous spirit and the ability to perceive things others do not. She quickly discerns the truth about her mother and Dimmesdale, though neither will confirm her suspicions. The townspeople say that she barely seems human and spread rumors that her unknown father is actually the Devil. Pearl has grown up with her mother outside of the town, and she often terrorizes the town’s children, who view her as a curiosity. She is wise beyond her years, frequently engaging in ironic play having to do with her mother’s scarlet letter.…
Fiction Response When reading the short story “Love in L.A.” by Dagoberta Gilb most readers will notice the importance of the characters and how they shape the outcome of the story. This story is truly character driven, meaning the plot relies on the characters, which makes it a very powerful literary element in this case. Jake, the protagonist of the fictional piece, can easily be envisioned as a young man with a carefree attitude who does not really care much about other people and their situations. One can tell Jake is definitely a pretty young man due to some of the things he daydreams about at the beginning of the story and the fact that he is daydreaming instead of paying attention to the road. Some of these thoughts include the brief idea of getting a steady job and his fantasies regarding his lifestyle (Gilb, 113). His carefree attitude can be seen through his dialogue with Mariana after the accident with remarks such as “So how ya doing? Any damage to the car? I’m kinda hoping so, just so it takes a little more time and we can talk some. Or else you can give me your phone number now and I won’t have to lay my regular b.s. on you to get it later.” (Gilb, 114) Even though Jake has just been in a car accident he was at fault for that could have severely injured someone he still has the idea of flirting with one of the other drivers involved. Jake is also the kind of guy who prefers to stay out of trouble for his own sake and his wallet’s, which is why he gives Mariana false information and uses license plates from scrapped cars in order to avoid paying for things he doesn’t want to pay for (Gilb, 114-115). Jake’s young, carefree attitude is seen again after he drives off from the accident with him instantly going back to fantasizing about making his car awesome without a single worry about what just happened (Gilb 115).…
Ellen DeGeneres never thought that announcing she was a lesbian would have been a big deal. She knew then that what she was doing would caused questions and controversy but not in a way where she would be considered the poster child for the Gay Community. The way Ellen came out to the world was a bigger shock to her than it was to her audience. This is when Ellen realized that she changed more than her own life coming out. Her fan base got bigger and her life opened up for the greater good. She felt like coming out should not change what she would be doing for humanity. On Ellen’s 50th birthday, she decided to raise money and get notice to her hometown, New Orleans, Louisiana, some help for the August 2005 Hurricane Katrina. This storm was one of the most deadly storms in United States history. During the storm the federal flood protection system failed and the levee broke, flooding 80% of the city and surrounding cities for weeks. Since Ellen had connections with many other celebrities, she used those connections to get help for her city. Brad Pitt was one of the celebrities that had a foundation going for rebuilding homes in New Orleans. With the help of Ellen putting out the foundation through her television show, Brad was able to get 150 homes built. She showed her passion for helping out when she told the world why this fundraiser was important to her. She shows that the place she looked at as home and helped made her who she was Ellen DeGeneres has been an inspiration to people for the past twelve years. Ellen’s life had just begun.…
