Ellery Queen And Manfred Lee's The Roman Hat Mystery
Ellery Queen was a unique, fictional detective featured in several mystery stories. Two American authors used him as a pseudonym. These cousins wrote under the name of Manfred Lee and Fredric Dannay. Manfred Lee was born on January 11, 1905 and Fredric was born on October 20, 1905. They were both born in Brooklyn, New York, where most of their childhood was spent. As young children, they never dreamed of being authors. They enjoyed reading literature pieces involving Sherlock Holmes, resembling a start to their career. Before Manfred evolved into an author, he married actress Kaye Brinker. This being his second wife; they had eight children. This work of art is from the Greek, Hellenistic period, c. 270- 250 B.C.E. This fifteen inch marble bust corresponds to a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty according to the typical facial features of the ruling family at that time. The Ptolemaic dynasty occurred when there was a succession of Macedonian Greeks over Egypt from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. until the annexation of Egypt by Rome and the suicide of Cleopatra VII in 30 B.C. Therefore, this head was most likely created to symbolize a Ptolemaic Queen. Its subject matter, the themes or ideas in a work of art distinct from its form, is not evident immediately. At first, one believes this to simply be a portrait of a woman typical of the time. Upon further research, it is believed that this head was created to represent a queen or even perhaps a goddess. Recently, it has been identified by different scholarly organizations as the head of Arsinoe II, who ruled with her brother Ptolemy II from 278 B.C.E. until her death in 270 B.C.E.1 (Met)…

The Silver Legion worked to achieve its goal of ensuring that the Constitutional rights written by the founding fathers be implemented, by electing the leader of their group, William Dudley Pelley in the presidential election 1940. During Pelley’s run for presidency, the organization was bringing awareness of communist ideas spreading in the nation. In the summer 1936, Pelley was giving speeches every other day to a crowd of thousands of people. It was found that “buried in his public excoriations of Roosevelt, Jews, bankers, and Communists were references to his esoteric beliefs”. Throughout his campaigning, Pelley found that he was having an inability to reach a common cause with with other extremist leaders. However, Pelley did write positive articles about other fascists leaders in the Silver Legion’s…

In this essay I will be discussing the article entitled “Making Roman-Ness and the Aeneid” by Katherine Toll. Toll argues; in her article, that the fundamental background of the Aeneid was the amalgamation of the colossal number of Italians that were enfranchised into Roman citizenship. Toll attempts to prove her argument by emphasizing that Vigil’s motive to write the Aeneid, was to offer a story of unity when it came to the culture and camaraderie of the native Romans and the new Italian citizens, who had until then seen each other as separate communities.…

Like all works of art. the portrait is a system of signs; it is often an ideogram of “public’ meanings condensed into the image of a human face. Roman portrait sculpture from the Republic through the late Empire-the second century BCE. to the sixth CE -constitutes what is surely the most remarkable body of portrait art ever created. Its shifting montage of abstractions from human appearance and character forms a language in which the history of a whole society can be read. Beginning in the first century B.C., Roman artists invented a new kind of portraiture, as unlike that of the great tradition of Greek Hellenistic art (whence the Romans had ultimately derived the idea of portraiture itself and a highly developed vocabulary of formal devices for its realization) as it was unlike that of their own previous Italo-Hellenistic local tradition. This new conception, conferring upon the portrait an unprecedented capacity to articulate and project the interior processes of human experience, made possible the achievement in the ensuing six centuries of what is surely the most extraordinary body of portrait art ever created, and forms the indispensable basis for the whole of the later European portrait tradition, from its rebirth in the 13th and 14th centuries to its virtual extinction in the 20th. No clear account of the nature of this reformulation of the structure of representation or of its historical significance has so far been given. That the portraiture which it engendered is strikingly “realistic” in the sense of evoking the presence of an astonishingly concrete and specific individuality, to a degree previously unknown and rarely equaled since, has been the universal experience of every observer. But this question-begging term (first used to characterize Roman portraiture, in opposition to the “idealism” imputed to the Greeks, three…

In the myth of Dionysus there isn’t exactly a conflict between two sides of people battling for good or evil, its more as a battle between the two sides of Dionysus’ inner self. Unlike most examples of good versus evil, there isn’t a triumphant side. Just the personality switches between Dionysus being the joy-god or the heartless, savage, brutal-god. The reason for this change is due to the fact that he is the vine god; Wine is bad as well as good. He’d bring up peoples hopes and make them believe that they were capable of anything, but once they were sober again or they became drunk, you could see his dark side begin to arise. The hopefulness would fade and then you could see the people transition into darkness.…

Another Ancient that makes the case that the regime or polis makes collective meaning, order, and justice possible is Livy. In his book, The Early History of Rome, Livy uses the history of Brutus to show the relationship between individuals in a polis and politics. Brutus’ political views tied directly with how he wanted Rome and its citizens to act and behave. He wanted to empower his citizens and give them strength during conflict or struggle. Brutus believed that if the people who occupy Rome are strong and powerful, Rome will also be. This is direct correlation to Aristotle in the fact that the polis and individuals who make it up are almost synonymous. This relationship is important in the fact that the model citizen in a regime and polis…
