The county health department has since set up measures to help improve the state of public health in this county. As a result, there has been an improvement in the health of individuals living in this county. The poor health status of Ellis County has resulted in the loss of lives of the citizens in this region.
The Healthy People 2020 provides the goals and objectives of the United States government in improving the health of all American citizens. By basing on these measures, it is possible for us to assess the aspects of the Ellis County physical health and wellness. There are Leading Health Indicators in Ellis County that show how the issues that have contributed to the poor health status of Ellis County. Tobacco use is one significant issue in the Ellis County that has contributed to the deteriorating health conditions in the region. A report by the Ellis County State’s Health survey in the year 2005 showed that in the past two decades there has been an increase in the use of tobacco in this county (Texas Department of Health Services, 2013).
This tobacco use in the Ellis County is not longer an individual problem but has become a community problem.
Controlling the use of tobacco in this county will help reduce the healthcare costs incurred in treating patients suffering from tobacco-related health conditions. In the year 2002 alone, the Center for Drug Control released estimates of about $4,000 per individual in health care costs for tobacco usage. The average deaths a year resulting from cardiovascular diseases account for expenditures worth close to $4 billion in this county. Apart from cardiovascular diseases, the Alzheimer’s disease also accounts for most of the deaths reported for persons over 65 years of age. This accounts for over 213% increase in deaths in this region (Texas Department of Health Services, 2013).
Nutrition and obesity are yet another health problem faced by the Ellis County. The number of obese individuals in the United States keeps going up every day. There is an increase in the health care costs related to treating the obese patients in the United States. A total of 129million out of 292million in the United States are overweight. In the Ellis County, the situation is no different. The total number of obese individuals with a BMI of over 30 and those who overweight with a BMI between 29 and 39 has been on the rise (State of the County’s Health Report, n.d). The rate of increase for these overweight and obese individuals in this county is the same as that of the overall nation.
The poor health status of the residents of Ellis County has mainly been attributed to poor physical activities of the body. There is a nationwide increase in the number of individuals who are physically inactive in the United States. This has contributed to an increase in the reduced health-related outcomes of this physical inactivity such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity as discussed earlier. The body needs to be kept physically active for it to generate the energy needed for proper functioning. It is because of this inactivity that there has been an increase in the number of various chronic diseases reported in Ellis County. The 2002-2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System results revealed that 29.6% of people in Ellis County did not have time for leisure activities that involved physical stress to their bodies (Texas Department of Health Services, 2013).
Lack of proper physical inactivity by the people of Ellis County has resulted in the diagnosis of about 12% of its residents with diabetes. Majority of these individuals diagnosed with diabetes in this county are between 35 and 60 years of age. This has accounted for an increase in the healthcare costs for taking care of these patients. The healthcare cost for patients with diabetes in Ellis County is about $14,000 compared to only $2,000 for patients living without diabetes (Texas Department of Health Services, 2013). This has raised an alarm on the importance of the public health ministry and departments in this county to educate the residents on the importance of physical activity and proper nutrition. If there is no containment of this situation soon enough, it could result in the loss of a lot of lives in this county.
