Bill Gates is now one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, but he did not earn his fortune in a straight line to success. Before launching Microsoft, Bill Gates was a Harvard University dropout. Gates entered the entrepreneurial scene with a company called Traf-O-Data, which aimed to process and analyze data from traffic tapes in Seattle. Although when he attempted to sell the idea alongside his business partner, Paul Allen. The product barley worked, it was a complete disaster. Nevertheless, Gates prevailed through his failure driven by his passion for computer programming. Microsoft went public in 1986, “Gates amassed a huge paper fortune as the company’s largest individual shareholder. He became a paper billionaire in 1986” according to editors of Britannica…
Andrew Carnegie was a true rags to riches story. When he was thirteen he started working, first as a bobbin boy in a cotton factory, then as a telegraph messenger boy then as a telegraph operator in the Pennsylvania Railroad. He soon became superintendent of his division. His first company was co-owned by Mr. Woodruff, the inventor of the sleeping car, in The Woodruff Sleeping Car Company, which made the core of his future fortunes. Bill Gates has been a CEO of Microsoft in the past and is currently a CEO of Cascade Investment. “Bill Gates founded the world's largest software business, Microsoft, and subsequently became one of the richest men in the world” (“Bill Gates Biography” par.1). He started without having anything and took a huge risk of starting the new business by himself. Bill Gates has worked very hard his entire life generating the Microsoft company. Furthermore, he also provided thousands of people with jobs. He was only in high school when he first started working and analyzing computers. To pursue his career further, he put his outstanding talents and intelligence with computers to use, and made himself a powerful entrepreneur. Gates expanded his success with Windows OS and developed other user-friendly software applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Critics of the company believed that electric cars would never be consumer-friendly as they would be too expensive and difficult to use. Elon Musk, however, proved all of these people wrong by building an eco-friendly line of electric cars at consumer-friendly prices. Tesla has cars ranging from $30,000 to $130,000. Also, the car is in fact easier to operate and use than most car brands such as Mercedes, BMW, and Audi. Elon Musk showed me through the establishment of Tesla Motors that engineering encompasses risk because ideas and inventions could be complete failures(the initial critique of Tesla). Elon Musk taught me that engineering takes innovation through his creation of SolarCity. Before the creation of SolarCity, Solar Energy seemed like a myth to mankind. However, Musk took a myth and turned it into a reality. He was daring enough to take the first step into the market of renewable energy, solar energy more specifically. Prior to this, no one even imagined creating solar panels for the everyday consumer and he simply did it. To him nothing is impossible and that is only one of the plethora of reasons why I admire him. Lastly, Elon Musk showed me that engineering takes…
He continues to strive for greatness, and exemplifies evolutionized thinking. He believes that by 2040 humans will have found a way to live on Mars (Conklin). It’s this thinking that shows he does not plan on slowing down progress any time soon. Hyperloop, SolarCity, Tesla, and SpaceX prove his main goal, a sustainable planet. All of his companies and inventions consist of components that will aid the planet in some shape or form. Hyperloop, Tesla, and SolarCity would reduce the amount of fossil fuel emissions that enter the air and create global warming. SpaceX would reduce the risk of overpopulation by providing an alternative planet where human can live. Some people may think Elon Musk has hit his peak in engineering success, but to him, he has only taken his first steps towards an exceptional…
