Not many people seemed to want to listen to the tracks, much less buy a whole album. His second album included "Your Song," a popular hit in both the United States and in England. In 1972 "Rocket Man" became John’s first number-one single in America. Other hits included "Daniel" and "Crocodile Rock" from the album “Don’t Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player”. The album “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, (1973) had the song "Candle in the Wind," written about actress Marilyn Monroe. Lennon agreed, doubting that this would actually happen. But, two days before John and the band’s fall tour of North America began, “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night” was released as Walls and Bridges’ debut single in the US on September 23, 1974.
