His music was able to live on, even after four decades. Many people still talk about Elvis and listen to his music. He wasn’t like other musicians, he used his many talents to entertain many. s major influences were Gospel and the Blues: predominantly African American genres [2]. So here we have this young white performer, often called the "King of Rock and Roll", who is loved by many white Americans, using genres that have their roots in the black community. So basically Elvis, "whose musical and visual performance idiom owed much to African American sources achieved the cultural acknowledgment and commercial success largely denied his black peers." [2] So while Elvis himself was said to be very supportive of the black community, many white Americans still shunned the black community. Hence, the indirect message was 'your contribution only matters if it benefits white Americans.' Not far from a slave owner's mentality: we'll…

His friends soon realized that he was acting strange and kept getting sicker and sicker. Presley's last live performance was on June 25, 1977. It was said by some that he was stumbling around the stage and at one point ripped his clothing (Elvis Presley). On August 12, 1977, a book, written by three of his bodyguards, was released telling about what they experienced while working with Elvis (Ibid). This was apparently the last straw for Elvis as he was found dead in his bathroom on August 16 (Ibid).…

They hold a special vigil in honor of the King of Rock-N-Roll himself, and they light candles while standing on the outside of Graceland. Elvis grew to become one of the most famous icons in Rock-N-Roll history that grew up in rural Tupelo, Mississippi. Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley visit Graceland regularly and Pricilla once said, “It is truly a sight to behold…This is something that Elvis would never, ever have believed could have taken place here.” Elvis was very productive with his music career, he received many Grammy awards, and he acted in many different movies (Baron Page…

He kept on singing into his late 70's, well after the point that his voice had lost its luster. He retired in 1995 after experiencing memory lapses during his performances. In the last years of his life, he settled into a quiet, comfortable role as a living legend, a forbidding king who lived in his palace and that only occasionally descended below to mingle among his subjects, usually to accept some award or tribute. Santeria is an old world religion that is derived from Africa but began growing in places like Cuba, Haiti, and Brazil when African slaves were transported there during colonization. In class I was introduced to Ana, my partner, who had a close family friend named Warren. Warren is a social worker who lives in Palmdale and actively practices Santeria, and who was introduced to it by his grandmother. Warren actually didn’t practice Santeria until he became an adult, and kept having visions of his grandmother (who had practiced Santeria) that had passed away. According to Warren, his visions gave him the courage to seek others that practiced Santeria and eventually was initiated into the religion. When beginning the interview with Warren, he defensively made a point to state that Santeria was not voodoo or witchcraft. “Santeria is very pure,” he stated. “Many people don’t understand Santeria and think that making spells or prayers with candles is dark and don’t understand it. Yet, what are we taught on our first birthday? On our very first birthday we are taught that we light a candle and make a wish so it will come true.”…
