Injury is a major cause of premature death and disability worldwide. In many instances the prompt provision of emergency care and rapid movement of injured victims from the scene to a health-care facility can save lives, reduce the chance of disability, and dramatically improve positive long-term outcomes. Students receive advanced instruction such as the use of airway devices, intravenous fluids and various medications. At the EMT-Paramedic level, the student receives education in anatomy and physiology, as well as more advanced medical skills through a broad range coursework, field experience and clinical practice. The progress of EMT education through all levels can take one to two years and may result in an associate's degree and certification is required at each level by every state.
