Emerson's Views On Friendship
At the beginning of a friendship, one should always start in a trusting position. This is a point I believe Emerson is making in his essay. It one enters a friendship guarded, there will be no room to grow or open up. They should not be afraid to be vulnerable, or try to protect themselves. Going into friendships thinking someone will hurt them will only weaken one’s ability to make any friends, rather than stay away from the poor ones. Trusting people is essential to becoming true friends with them. Opening up and being honest with friends is crucial as well. Emerson says, “I do not wish to treat friendships daintily, but with roughest courage. When they are real, they are not glass threads or frostwork, but the solidest thing we know”. Each person must be open and truthful with the other to connect deeper. Conversations should also be limitless, without fear of judgment. Emerson, while discussing the bond of two friends, states, “Now this convention, which good sense demands, destroys the high freedom of great conversation, which requires an absolute running of two souls into one”. My take from this is that in order to have the deepest connection as possible, friends must know a great deal about each other and be able to understand the person’s inner workings. Over the course of a friendship, one learns about the others thoughts, beliefs, and actions. Knowing how a friend’s mind works strengthens the bond between both parties. The more one knows about a person, the harder it is for the friendship to end. Likewise, fear of being to open with someone can deteriorate a friendship. Emerson discusses the thought that being afraid of being to open can make one lose a genuine love. Being guarded in any type of relationship will never allow for progression. Because of that, many people will lose interest in continuing relations and will move on to someone who can open up in the way they want. When it comes to acquaintances, opening up may seem premature, but keeping distance will restrict the friendship to the same level forever. Relationships in general need some kind of commitment to keep it going. Without a deep attachment, there is lack of reason to keep going. I believe this is what Emerson means in his essay when he discusses opening up to a

Friendship is first and foremost an ideal, something to aspire to, much like wisdom. It is never fully attainable, at most we are offered brief moments to its truth and we should revel in it when it shows itself. Much like wisdom, the pursuit of it is noble, for instance you don’t break off everything because of one small fight. If that is the case then it would not be a strong relationship. One does not give up when things start to get rough, so the pursuit of an impossible goal, actualizing an ideal, is futile, but we become better people through the chase and that is what…

Friendship is not just necessary, but also noble.Friendship consists of goodwill between two people. You can only have a few friends being that its take some precious time to build a real friendship. Aristotle’s speaks about how there are three kinds of friendship. The first is friends of utility, where both people receive some benefit from each other. Aristotle believed that this is the type of friendship that is for the old. Aristotle argued that they “are at such a time of life pursue not what is pleasant but what is beneficial.” The second is friends of pleasure, where both people are attracted to each other, good looks, or other their pleasant qualities all together . aristotles says this friendship is for the young. Aristotle argues that the young because “...quickly become friends and quickly stop...” and “...love and stop loving quickly...” The third is friends of excellence, where both people admire the other’s excellence and help one another strive for excellence. Aristotle says this about friends of excellence “...complete sort of friendship between people who are good and alike in virtue...”friends of virtue or excellence is hard to come by especially in the world we live in today because it is so much individualism. According to Aristotle the first two friendships are accidental, because in these case friends are only thinking about their own utility and pleasure, not are going to change over a period of time. If a friendship is based on excellence it will be a long lasting relationship, because excellence is a quality. This kind of friendship is the one everyone wants to have and it overlooks the other two friendships. This kind of friendship though is hard to find and takes a lot of time to progress but it is worth it. It is nothing like having a real and true friend. Friends who want the same thing will…

Having more relations towards one person then another ends up making Emerson feel that there is no joy with all the rest and finds all the other friendships to be quite mean and cowardly. Some people would agree with that statement that he ends up making, considering there are people in the world that think like Emerson. There are people who believe that having an equal level across the board for friendships are important and, they can end up feeling like they are being unreasonable to all the other relations they have.
