According to Ryan Kelly, in his article Psychology of Inside Out he states that our personalities and our memories correlate (Ryan Kelly.) However, our mind does not have “islands” of core memories, regardless we do have core memories based from our personalities and emotions. Also, in his article, he states that in a sense our memories do fade. We have “sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory” (Ryan Kelly.) Over time, our information of events do begin to dicipate depending on the significance of the event. For example, in the movie there is a fading memory of Riley’s childhood imaginery friend, Bing Bong. In the end of the movie, Joy, Riley’s leading emotion, is given assistance by Bing Bong, then he fades away into the memory dump where he will be forgotten forever. Bing Bong is represented with Joy and in the end Sadness. However, there are some memories that will be hidden, though not forgotton in the cortex of the brain. For example, Jangles. However, Sadness trully starts to be more prominent when Riley moves from Minesotta to San Francisco. Sadness dominates because Riley is sorrowful due to the loss of her home, friends, and her childhood. Sadness is seen as moping and sulking around the “headquarters” of Riley’s brain. When Sadness touches the memory spheres, Riley’s memories become altered to reveal a sad demeanor instead of a convivial experience. According to The Science of Inside Out a persons Sadness pulls others in to comfort and help (Dachner Keltner & Ekman.) For example, when Riley runs away from home, she returns home and hugs her parents in comfort from Sadness and Anger. Sadness must be realized so that positivity can be produced.
