Empathy For Ry Video Analysis
When I watched this video In the beginning I felt empathy for Ryan. I've seen a guy go through a detox, during that detox I watched as his arms tightened up. He started having a miniature seizure. He was claiming to see shadow figures and snakes. He eventually had to go to the hospital and receive treatment. The next week I seen him back on the same path. I've always been fascinating with easily people can get lost in alcohol, but I understand because I've experienced it.
In the video Ryan explained "I thought I knew what addiction was. I didn't know that alcohol is so hard for people to quit when you get into it so much." Reminds me to realize how addictive and dangerous alcohol is. According to the CDCP alcohol causes about 88,000 deaths

First of all, John Conlan is missing lots of important assets, such as restraint, which is resisting drugs & alchohol. John says, “I smoke one with a recessed filter myself,” (2). This shows that John doesn’t care about saying no to doing drugs and drinking alcohol underage. Something equally as important, Lorraine says, “And he drinks and smokes more than any boy I ever heard of,” (8). This proves he abuses both alcohol and drugs which is unacceptable. He doesn’t just drink once a day and just one cigarette, but he smokes all day and drinks a lot. The fact that John can’t say no to drugs are alcohol will make him very unhealthy and not be as happy.…

His future career goals are dwindling because of the negative choices that he is making. Booze and negative social relationships have become distractions that steered him off the path of success that he once embarked upon. A repetitive cycle of partying Thursday till Monday and trying to maintain normalcy (crashing is also an option) Tuesday and Wednesday is ongoing. It is possible that he is traveling down the road of addiction. Those who are bound by abuse can live unfocused and disoriented lives. Over time, this can lead to divorce, job loss, and even the loss of child custody. Although drug abuse may be a one-time event, if one is not careful, the behavior can lead one down the path of addiction as in Jay’s case. It appears that he have a natural proclivity towards abuse and addiction because his father Don also had a drinking problem. Dr. Clinton tells us in the video presentation that some of the effects of addiction includes: “control problems, compulsiveness, narrowing focus, denial, tolerance and withdrawal” (Clinton, 2009). We see many of these components in Jay’s occupational…

When he was 17 years old, he quit school and joined the navy because of his drinking. He later got married to a beautiful girl and had two lovely kids with her (the son who actually showed up to the meeting with him and the daughter who got married few weeks back). Due to his uncontrollable drinking, his wife later divorced him and made a deal that if wants to see his kids again, he will have to quit drinking and get over his alcohol addiction. And that’s exactly what he did, he started going to AA meetings and hasn’t picked up a drink in 34 years. George’s life story reminded me of my grandparents who got divorced because of my grandfather’s alcohol addiction, which led to abuse and violence. The only difference is that my grandfather never got over his alcohol addiction and it literally ruined his life…

Then about a year ago a friend’s solution to her complaints that the pot was “just not cutting it anymore” was to introduce her to crystal meth. That’s all it took was the one time and she was hooked.…

The film mentioned facts such as “alcohol is the most widely used drug among teenagers”, yet the focus of the film was strongly orientated towards adult alcoholics. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, empathy is defined as, the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner. In accordance with empathy, empathetic listening is defined by a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding and trust. It is absolutely essential for the listener to receive and accurately interpret the speaker’s message, and then provide an appropriate response. According to Salem (2003), “There are a few key benefits to empathetic listening which include the ability to build trust and respect amongst one another, enabling the person to release their emotions, reduce stress within one another, encourage the surfacing of information that would otherwise be ignored, and last but not least the ability to create a safe environment that is conductive to collaborative problem solving.”…
