According to the Merriam dictionary, “Empathy” is defined as: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; also: the capacity for this.…

Empathy refers to “the ability to understand and share the feelings of others” (dictionary source). However, effective altruists are not drawn to the cause because of emotions. Instead, they are more concerned with maximizing the benefits with a limited amount of resources. In other words, effective altruists are very analytical and calculative…
It was the middle of an away sophomore baseball game against DeWitt. My brother, Keegan, was up to bat. The pitch came, he swung and down he went. The baseball came off his bat and drilled him in the left eye. There was only one parent there, one of Keegan’s teammate’s dad. He drove Keegan to the hospital and called my parents. At the time, I was at a softball game working the scoreboard for the varsity West Delaware Hawks team. My mom called to tell me my grandma would pick me up when I was done and that her and my dad were on their way to the Iowa City hospital. My dad was at work at the time and met my mom there. They would explain more later. After they got down there and I got home with my sisters, I called my mom. She gave me an explanation…
After observing the outside of the venue and its surroundings, I entered Out of Town News in order to interact directly with its proprietors and patrons and to find out more about the venue. The observations and insights I gathered supported my initial hypothesis, stated above. Inside the…
Empathy, to me, means that everyone should have the same opportunity as everyone else. That everyone should be given the same chance. It should be up to you to how you use that opportunity. In Harrison Bergeron it's believed that equality means that everyone should be the same in every way and that this is a good thing. I disagree with this completely.…
The term empathy is the ability to understand or feel the other person’s feelings. In the lines of Steve Dutch he doesn’t give any empathy. Dutch implies that students claim to know the material, but they not do well on exams. He believes that if you can’t answer the questions about the material you don’t know the material. I strongly disagree with Dutch’s argument of the line “I know the material- I just don’t do well on exams”, because many people have anxiety, different ways of learning, and the way questions are asked. Dutch is only giving his opinion of the situation his not facing in facts.…
The story takes place in a town called Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930s. Despite the whites treating the African Americans like subordinates, the townsfolk treat each other like family, with the exception of the Ewell family. In the beginning of the book Harper Lee illustrates empathy is learned through each character passing it on to each other as if it were a tradition. In one of the scenes where Scout(Jean Louise Finch) our protagonist has a confrontation with her teacher Miss Caroline , Atticus gives her the most important advice. Atticus promptly tells scout can get better along if she can view though Miss Caroline point of view: “‘first of all, if you can learn a simple trick, scout, you’ll get along alot better with all kinds of folks.…

Scout demonstrates a lack of empathy by never comprehending the struggles others face. This is shown through the teacher’s misunderstandings of Walter’s situation, where as a result Scout beats him up. By never taking at hand Walters condition Scout is absent of empathy. Similarly Jem doesn’t always take into account others emotional trauma. Falsely advertising Boo Radley’s life story, Jem blatantly thinks he is a “monster” not trying to fathom the effects this might cause on Boo’s self-esteem. The motive behind Jem’s actions stems from an unknowing of empathy. Despite this Scout begins to comprehend the importance of empathy. When Atticus advises Scout “To fight with [her] head than [her] fist” she takes it into consideration, then later…

Empathy is a significant and influential part of the healthcare system. It is important for health professionals to include a true understanding and compassion to their patients; moreover, psychologically a person is more capable of getting through a health problem when they are approaching their issue in a more assured approach. This encourages more effective communication between the patient and the healthcare provider. According to Kasley Killam, effective communication is associated with higher patient satisfaction, better adherence to medications, lower likelihood of mistakes, and fewer malpractices. Based on research, effective physician-patient communication results in more positive health outcomes for the patient (Killam, 2014). The…

Maintaining a capacity for empathy in contrast to pitying the pain of others creates a mirroring effect of compassion with potential to reach countless individuals beyond oneself. A disconnect lies within the use of sympathy to connect to others who are struggling and can often create a patronizing infliction that belittles the individual’s pain. Every individual fights a complex battle throughout their life, and the weapons to win one’s war can often be found in the advice from those who are willing to take the step to relate to another’s level. In the past three months, persisting through a challenge has allowed me to obtain an ability to give back to others that are dealing with similar feelings of discontent by sharing methods I used to bring myself out of confusion in my studies. By empathizing to the hardships…
