I learned it can be harder than it seems to find a book you think someone else would enjoy reading based on questions you ask them. Also, it is harder to find a book for someone who states they do not have much time to read and find it hard to read a book that is not something they absolutely enjoy reading. In the classroom, I can use interest inventories by giving one to my students then helping them find books they would enjoy reading. If the students can find books they actually want to read, it will make them more likely to love…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

I read it whenever I got the chance. Day and night. The story had come alive and dragged me into it. When I read, I experienced a feeling I had never felt. Everytime I read a chapter from the book, it drawed me in more. I traveled into the book and soon it became a part of me. One day it was Chapter 13 and the next it was Chapter 21. There was no stopping me as I read and read and read. I began to talk to my friends about it and they recommended other books for me to read. I finished the first book, then I read the second, “Catching Fire,” and lastly I read “Mockingjay”. This was the best book series I had ever read in all of my eleven years of being on earth. My brain began to beg me for more reading material as time grew on. Reading began to teach me new things that I hadn’t known before. As my thirst for reading grew, I felt like I was becoming smarter as well. How could a book change so much of a person in so little…

I don’t think I had 100% read a real book all by myself at this time, needless to say, this terrified me. The book I chose to read was the Maze Runner by James Dashner. As I began I was hesitant, but I quickly got into the book and finally understood the saying ‘I couldn’t put the book down’. It was action packed and filled with words I knew and understood. Reading this book gave me a new found confidence in reading and in myself that I had never experienced before. After the Maze Runner I began reading more and more. I started to enjoy reading, which is a stark difference from my former refusal…

The first books I ever started reading were Winnie the Pooh and Dr Suess books. When I was young my parents were really good about getting me started with reading different books and for a long time I loved reading, as long as it was books I got to choose and enjoyed reading myself. Once I got further along in school and they started mandating what books we had to read I got to the point where I didn’t find reading enjoyable any longer. I didn’t like most of the books my teachers were picking for us to read so I felt like I had to force myself to read them and it caused me to even stop reading books outside of school…

Throughout high school we have always been tasked with different materials to read; whether it be Shakespearean texts, short stories, poems, or just books in general. No matter what though, I love to read. So any text I take in, I am always eager to absorb the words. The texts I have read at the time may have just felt like assignments, but now as I am older, I can see the lessons to be learned within them and how they were a major aspect as to how I view situations in the world around me. I cannot pick a favorite text that I have read throughout my grades nine to twelve years, but I will review a few that made an impact on me.…

I had my English class as the first class of the day. The teacher wanted to encourage us to read again because she noticed that many of no longer enjoyed reading. She gave us the first ten to fifteen minutes of each class to read. She didn’t care what we read as long as we were reading something. At first I was happy about the idea simply because that meant we didn’t have to spend as much time talking about writing or looking at the assigned novels we had to read.…

There was an instance when I myself needed someone to introduce empowerment to me. It was when I was in high school. The city that I went to was very poor and our school was unfunded. At the time I did not believe that I would be able to get into college or let alone go out of state. My tenth grade English teacher made a group that she would take on trips to different colleges, help with our essays, allowed time for SAT Prep and also kept in contact to make sure we all were on target. She indirectly helped with empowering us, although she could not empower us herself, she helped give us the tools. The fact that I am in an African…
