If Antonio Melendez decides to apply the utilitarian approach to decision making, the entire organization will benefit out of it but will only remain to its wrongdoings. They will get their insurance claim and continue with its company operations. On the other hand, there is no guarantee that the insurance company will not discover the fraud. What if it was discovered? It would result to a failure that he would never imagine.
Should he decide to apply the individualism approach, he will instruct Kevin to report Empress to the insurance company and face the threat of becoming fired because he exposed all the dirty secrets of the company. But the most important thing is that he acts as a role model for others in carrying a tremendous responsibility for setting the ethical climate in an organization.
If I am in Antonio’s position, I will escalate the matter to the top management level to make sure that they are aware of what is happening to the company. I will present to them the pros and cons should they decide or not to commit insurance fraud. If all of them agreed to commit insurance fraud then perhaps I should have to make a decision for myself.
Definitely I will not join them in the conspiracy, so my response would be at postconventional level of moral development. I would feel great about myself because I know what I did was the right to do.
If Antonio or Kevin were fired because they reported Empress’s fraud, they should not remove all traces of their employment at the cruise line from their resumes.
