En101 Class Reflection
En101 was a class designed to help students develop their writing skills. Time in this class was spent writing essays or learning ways to better our essays. That is what this class has done for me. It opened my eyes to new ways of writing, and it helped me improve certain aspects of my writing.
To start off, previous to this class, when I was given an essay, I would start writing right away and wrote down whatever came to my mind. Although, this never really harmed my grade tremendously, I have realized that it is better to organize your thoughts before hand, in ways such as an outline or free writing. After taking this course, I feel the need to create an outline for each essay that I write so my thoughts are well-organized. Also, we were expected to do a peer review after every essay that we write. At first, I thought peer reviews were very irritating and useless. But now I see that peer reviews catch mistakes that we, the writers, don’t always catch. Outlines and peer reviews had once been a

We had to write from narrative essays, to persuasive essays, to argumentative to reflective essays. This course expanded my knowledge of how to write different kinds of essays because each type of essay has to be written in a certain way with a certain tone. For instance, in my persuasive in class essay Without a Saddle, I had to persuade the audience that youth learn either through experience or promoting cautiousness through restrictions. I thought I was good at writing persuasive essays before but now I learned how to persuade so that the audience can understand my point of view. And after understanding what Professor Anderson is trying to tell me, I revised my paper into a well developed essay. I have noticed that I developed a better and a not so broad thesis, and I have clear transition sentences. That makes the reader understand what is going on and to keep the reader

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

At the beginning of the course I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was my first year in college and my first English class of the year. In High school, English classes worshiped the 5 paragraph essay format, and this format spontaneously disappeared in English 101. Instead of the 5 paragraph format, we were introduced to writing about the text instead of the topic. Our papers weren’t structured as 5 paragraphs as much as length in pages. The texts we were introduced to were focused on rhetorical analysis. Rhetorical analysis is an essay that breaks down a work into pieces and explains how these pieces fit together to give off a certain effect, such as persuasion. The papers we were doing were are interpretative but based on rhetorical analysis.…

Writing three different types of papers helped me to improve my Rhetorical Knowledge. In my past I have written many research papers, however, I have little experience writing personal narratives or rhetorical analysis papers. This class gave me the opportunity to practice both forms of writing. I feel more confident writing a personal narrative or rhetorical analysis than I previously did. I also understand different rhetorical situations, which is critical in developing a strong paper.…

Analyzing before this class was difficult for me to do and after seeing how important it is or necessary it is to have to make a stronger argument made me want to improve. After doing hours of research for every essay we had this semester made me comprehend why the prompt were questions I should have made for myself. How although many things in life can be subjective it does not affect the relevancy. One of my favorite things we did for this class was to read The Handmaid’s Tale, although many would disagree with me, it made me want to change my opinion on certain things. How frightening it must be ever live in a society like the one in the novel…

During this semester our class had to write three major essays, which are: Rhetorical Analysis (RA), Discipline Investigation (DI), and Critical Reading Reflection (CRR). The Rhetorical Analysis paper is based on how “to develop your understanding of rhetoric by investigating how a writer constructed a professional document or text in your major field.” It is also “to practice analytical thinking and clear writing. Basically, I had to research a professional document that is in the field that I want to succeed in my future career. I had to analysis what the rhetorical strategies and appeals are and explain it. The Discipline Investigation paper is based on “to investigate a discourse community you hope to join and to learn about the kinds of text that community uses.” Before I started this paper, I researched about the job position I would be interested in the future and set up interviews with general managers from hotels. I asked questions to get more outside knowledge and get to know how the job works personally. The Critical Reading Reflection is based on the book we read which is, The Mind at Work and personal experiences with work. My first best essay is the Discipline Investigation, then the second best is Rhetorical Analysis, then the third best is Critical Reading Reflection.…

I learned two major things about my writing skills during this class. First, when presenting an essay for peer review, make sure that it is not a very rough draft. Second, the types of essay styles can change easily when writing. Even though my paper is supposed to be expository, using certain words and tone can create a totally different essay style.…

Although I had to delete two pages out of the essay, I was still left with a decent foundation to produce an essay that matched the prompt. My editing process was tedious, multiple times I had to go back to the essay and erase parts that I liked but did not seem to make sense within the context of the prompt. I also noticed I was making a lot of organizational mistakes; I think this was due to me keeping parts of my old essay. Next time I think that starting from the beginning might be the best idea in order to avoid organizational mistakes and avoid straying from the topic. The peer review was actually helpful this time, I think I benefit more from the peer reviews instead of the personal review. I believe that I’m too biased when it comes to my work, so I need someone else to judge it. During the peer review I received good tips and he pointed out areas where I started to get off topic, which really helped me out when trying to put together my final…

Some changes that I have made to this document are for example, strengthening the rhetorical appeals, cutting out sentences that were not useful, and also making the essay more direct. This shows my development as a conscious writer because I was able to take comments that I received and put them into action. Not only that, I was able to read over my essay and catch mistakes that I did not see when I first submitted this assignment in the beginning of the semester. In these final revisions I thought I was good at being able to better specify certain problems to make my argument more understandable. Also I thought I was efficiently able to re-read the essay and find sentences that did not have to be in the essay because they were either repeater,…

My work from the beginning of STEP to now has drastically changed especially in my writing. I never enjoyed writing essays because I did not do well with writing under pressure. After completing my essay, I felt confident about what I produced. However ,when my essay was handed back, it was noted that I lacked vocabulary, figurative language and my sentence structure was poor. After being in class, I have improved on my essay writing skills. I used more vocabulary terms than I usually would in my essays, had better sentence structure, and completed the entire essay with time to spare to check it over. In addition I learned that i have been using seven deadly writing sins in my writing. Continuously writing and having my peers edit my work helped me eliminated those sins from my writing. When school starts again, I will be prepared to write a timed essay with the new skills I have attained.…

Throughout this semester I have received a lot of input and criticism on my essays from my TA, my professor and fellow students. This semester I was fortunate to receive quick, fairly reliable, built in feedback. From the feedback that I have received by taking this class I believe that I have become a better writer as it was beneficial for the most part. Feedback that I received from my fellow students was occasionally helpful. It typically varied from week to week. One week I would write a paper and get a ton of markings and criticism on it which was helpful because I was able to see what I did wrong and I would rarely have to get it proof read another time. Other times I would turn in a paper and it would come back with few markings and comments. This felt almost like a waste of time because I knew that I had more mistakes that I did not catch earlier. Because of this I would have to go out of my way and someone else would have to go out of their way to get it proof read again, or I would risk handing in the good copy with mistakes. One thing that I appreciated from peer evaluation days was that was able to see what worked in my paper, what did not and what I need to improve on.…

Being a student of Mrs. Wilson Comp. II Class was okay this semester. There are a few things that I did learn this semester in her class. I learned how to write a research paper and do academic journals. I enjoy doing the academic journals because it was an interesting way to find information that you are looking for. If I ever need to look up any information that I need to find on the internet I could use my academic journals method to help narrow down my information. However, the research paper was horrible because it was very difficult for me to put all your information together to try to make an argument that need to be cited if the information was not mine. It was hard to use the citation that was not mine without plagiarizing.…

I am not very interested in writing, I write when I have a need to write, thus I avoid writing to the last extent preventing me from taking on challenges and to learn more. I lose hope many times, which leads to losing interest and purpose. Once when I had to write a persuasive essay, I lost all hope even before starting. Since I had no interest, I ended up with no purpose, yet with all this happening in my head, I knew I still had to write it. When it comes to persuading someone, your content and organizing your points strategically is what makes a good persuasive essay, which is my weakness. Still, I wearily trudged on and tried finding my content which would hit the point and maybe persuade the reader to do what I said. Because I didn’t want to go deep, I floated in a limited mindset while writing it, causing me to not explore new ideas. This limited my essay's content, thus causing me not to get a good refined essay and grade. This example of my lack of grit prevented me from taking on the challenge and hoping I would finish it and striving to finish…

To give a little background about the paper I am reviewing I will give some information about the paper and the process I underwent with my preparation and writing. My junior year English class was centered on writing a ten-page graduation paper that would eventually turn into a speech. The essay had to be argumentative and we chose a side that we had to validate within the paper. There were a lot of requirements entailed, such as formatting, referencing certain sources and…
