Endora In What's Eating Gilbert Grape

In What’s Eating Gilbert Grape we are introduced to the town of Endora. The first impression we get of Endora is in the opening scene of the film. We see dry brown grass which is symbolic of the dull, liflessness of the town and the wide open fields show how isolated the characters are. An establishing shot focuses on a road which foreshadows the journey the protagonist will go on. The camera draws out and we see two characters, Gilbert and Arnie, sitting on the side of the road under the shade of a tree. This suggests that they are shaded by this place and that this is their comfort zone and they don’t go past that point. As the scene progresses a fleet of caravans emerge from the horizon, the unknown. This is accompanied with chimes. Both
