This non-profit organization uses both rhetorical and symbolic means of galvanizing its membership. Rhetorically, the Boys and Girls Club has celebrated its volunteers and members alike. In the artifacts shown, the Club has verbally and publicly celebrated the people that make the organization great. They have vocalized how thankful they are for their volunteers in the APD and “Volunteer Spotlight” posts. The club has also showcased the members of the club by celebrating the kids championship status and a teenage Club member’s performance. The Club does not only galvanize its membership only rhetorically, but symbolically as well. In 1949 the Boys and Girls Club established a program to recognize the outstanding achievements of Club Teens.…
Bar soap is seemingly such an unassuming everyday household item. However it isn’t as simple as it may appear. For example, Dove soap is made up of sodium cocoylisethionate, stearic acid, coconut acid, and sodium tallowate. In addition, water, sodium isethionate, sodium stearate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoate or palm kernelate, fragrance, sodium chloride, BHT and titanium dioxide are also used. Now, the once ordinary bar of soap seems so much more complex. To my surprise, many women around the world see a bar of Dove soap even more complex than that. The Dove campaign for Real beauty has inspired many women to think far more critically about something that they would normally not think much about. Since 2004 Dove has tried, “…to celebrate the natural physical variation embodied by all women and inspire them to have the confidence to be comfortable with themselves.”(Dove) Dove has launched a variety of advertisements, video, workshops, and sleepover events to 11 million women throughout the country.…
Luminosity logo appears; an outline of a profile of a man with an orange brain. In the next scene an older woman with gray hair and glasses says “I did it to be quicker.” as white scribbles (like chalk on the board) of lightning bolts appear around her, a disclaimer is placed in the bottom left corner “actor portrayal”. In the following scene a young man says “Just to stay sharp.” as white scribble of glasses appear around his eyes. Next a young woman says with a relieved half joking expression “To remember people’s names.” as names and name tags appear around her. The previously shown older woman appears and says ”To concentrate a little better.” as drops with simple math problems in them fall by her. Next, the same young man is shown and says “To learn faster” as little squarer arrangements with some squares getting filled in is seen in the background. A young woman with dyed blond curly hair appears and says “Just not to miss stuff.” while little white circles are flying around on white lines representing orbits around her head. The young woman…

In the early spring of 1986, The Challenger was scheduled to launch in the morning from the Kennedy Space Center. The Challenger had seven passengers. One of these passengers was a Christa McAuliffe, a social studies teacher from New Hampshire. She was the first ordinary citizen to be going to space. The social studies teacher had won the opportunity through NASA’s Teachers in space program. The spacecraft was in the air only seventy-three seconds before it exploded and broke apart into the ocean. Everyone was in shock. All the passengers were killed tragically. This put a horrible mark on NASA’s reputation. Some even wanted to close the exploration to space. American was in mourning and everyone felt the blow of the tragedy. However, President Ronald Reagan saw it fit to continue space exploration. He gave an argument and a tribute to America and the families of the lost passengers. His tribute swayed American to see the silver lining in the tragedy and understand why we must continue the journey to explore space.…

Through the story Unbroken, Laura Hillenbrand meticulously depicts the inspirational life of Louie Zamperini. She does this using her unique, yet effective writing style. In addition, the novel allows readers to learn about the many horrors of war. Also, the reader investigates World War II from a different perspective by looking at the fight against the Japanese rather than the Nazi Germans. For these reasons, one can conclude that Hillenbrand 's Unbroken is an incredible, masterfully told story.…
The Three Rhetorical Appeals are the three main points by which people are influenced, and it allows you to effectively evaluate different texts and arguments for their oratorical strategies. The first, Logos, is the method of reason, logic, or facts. Any type of argument which appeals to someone’s rational side is appealing to logos. Second, Ethos, an approach of credibility, authority, or character, appeals to demonstrate the author’s expertise, trustworthiness, and honesty and tries to put the author in a more positive position to the audience. Lastly, Pathos, this is a strategy of affect and emotions. Pathos appeals to an audience’s emotions of anger, excitement, or sorrow. These three points are important to the audience to analyze the…
Dave Chappelle returns to his hometown of Washington D.C. in the year 2000, during his tour around the country, to perform for the people of D.C. During his show “Killin’ Him Softly” Chappelle effectively uses rhetorical strategies by engaging his audience, understanding the culture he is addressing, as well as exemplifying the problem with racial stereotypes and the disparity of police brutality between the African American community and the white community.…
I believe that the rhetorical strategy of narration is both seen differently in the article, “Unnatural Killers”, by John Grisham and the article, “The Case Against College Athletic Recruiting” by Ben Adler. Both appeal emotionally to the reader but one is a lot more logical in its approach then the other.…
Writer, Alice Walker, in her narrative essay, “Beauty: When the Other Dancer Is the Self” recounts a tragic event that occurred at the age of 8 years old. Walker’s objective is to tell her readers about an event that changed not only her physical appearance, but how she considers herself, forever. While speaking about her life after the accident, she uses many rhetorical devices to speak to her readers. Plot development, metaphors, repetition, flashback, and Aristotelian appeals are only some of the devices used. However, those few certainly deliver the message that she is trying to point out to her audience.…
In the first story, A Temporary Matter, it is Shukumar’s guilt that divide the couple rather than their inability to communicate. During the day, he decides to work on his novel and eat in the room that was meant to be the babies “because it [is] a place Shoba [avoids],” (8). This contrasts Shoba’s decision to “[take] her plate to the living room,” which is an area accessible to both of them, showing that she is at least making an effort while Shukumar cowers in another room (8). This solitude stems from his anxieties about not being there for Shoba in the hospital; Shukumar is avoiding his wife because confronting her means confronting his guilt. Another subject Shukuma does not want to come face to face with is how little he has been able…
Rhetoric is used to convey one’s ideas to an audience through multiple different forms of expression. These different forms can be written, verbal and even visual. One form of visual rhetoric can be found by looking at all the different, unique masks that were created by members of the communication class. Each mask that was created was very creative and completely unique from everyone else’s mask. Each mask looked completely different from all the other mask’s, but each message behind the mask was also unique to each individual.…
The topic of focus for this third unit was Documenting Work. In correlation with this topic, we discussed discourse, which we defined in class as language in its social context, and the ways it is used to carry out the social aspects of a community. Among the items we discussed as part of a discourse community, we included how people write while they work, how each workplace forms its own community, and lastly, genres and conventions used by the community. After our group discussions and reading from “Genres of Chi Omega”, where we identified genres as Genre “flexible responses to fit the needs of a discourse community or social setting”, it was easy for my partner and I to determine what genres are used by hospitals and nurses, including verbal…
Every element in a design communicates something. Every element has an effect on the whole exhibit. Every design comes with an aesthetic. When the elements of our design work together in a style that unites them into something unified, we create a more significant aesthetic. When we choose an aesthetic that’s in synchronize with our message it becomes even more significant. Whenever we think about aesthetics we think about making things beautiful. Beauty for beauty’s sake is not meaningful in the perspective of a single and specific design. The meaning comes from more than beauty alone. Art and design are not quite the same. They overlap more than others think, but they are not the same thing.…
