Energy Drinks Consumption
There is increasing use of energy drinks to enhance athletic performance. The purpose of the study is to observe the effects of energy drinks on heart rate and if there is an increase in overall heart rate due to increase consumption. Twenty-three males participated in the study as well as ten males attending GCU. Prior to completing the physical test, participants were arbitrarily assigned to receive a placebo or energy drink. In addition, a Polar heart rate monitor was attached to the individuals prior to the physical tests and collected the heart rate every minute. There is no sufficient data that is confident enough to back up the hypothesis that an increase in energy drink consumption increases the overall heart rate.

Effects of Energy Drinks on Heart Rate Among elite and recreational athletes, there is frequent use of energy drinks to enhance athletic performance. In fact, recent subjective reports show that in college students, energy drinks are routinely consumed during fitness workouts (Elitok, et al., 2015). The control group averaged 19.8 years in age with an average resting heartbeat of 66.0 bpm and with an average heart rate during exercise of 105.2 bpm. On the other hand, the group who drank energy drinks averaged 19.4 years in age with an average resting heartbeat of 70.4 bpm and with an average heart rate during exercise of 118.4 bpm. When comparing the average resting heart rate between the two groups, there was an 6.67% increase in resting heart rate in the group who drank energy drinks.     The placebo controlled experiment design can be helpful in this study. In order to determine the effect of caffeinated energy drink, the total of twenty athletes will volunteer to participate in it. All the participants will be divided into two groups; ten will drink caffeinated energy drink and other ten will ingest placebo (no caffeine content).
