IS TV GOOD OR BAD FOR AMERICA?
Just recently, on one warm summer day, my two and a half year old son, Ryan is playing outside in the back yard with the neighbors kids when I see them all gathered around the fence looking at an ant hill. Then in unison, they all go, “A is for Ants!” At this point I still haven’t caught on to what they are doing. In fact, I am confused when they all bring their hands up to their heads and point their index fingers upwards as if pretending to have horns. I don’t see the connection between ants and horns until they all start singing, “The ants go marching one by one hurrah, hurrah! The ants go marching two by two hurrah, hurrah! The ants go marching three by three, and the little one stops to climb the tree… And they all go marching down, to the ground, to get out, of the rain, boom boom boom boom…” It is then that it dawns on me that the index fingers up in the air represent an ant’s antennae or feelers, and the song they are singing is from my one of Ryan’s favorite TV shows, that is very popular among kids for that matter, called, “Barney and Friends.”
At two and a half, my son Ryan already knows how to count from one to twenty. He knows his alphabets, and his colors! Not only that, but he also knows his animals. Pull out any random letter, or number, or animal picture and he will tell you what it is. It doesn’t have to be sequential or alphabetical order for him to figure it out. I swear, this level of intelligence at that age baffles me every day! I keep thinking to myself, there is no way I was that smart when I was a kid! As you can imagine, my wife and I would like to take all the credit for our son’s intelligence and attribute it to our superior genes, but of course
