In this novel, “The Great Gatsby”, different themes were being portrayed in the novel, we find out about love, wealth, social and moral values, corruption, betrayal, pursuit of pleasure, and the American dream. But amongst all these themes, the corruption in the society was more intensed. We find out that even the rich and beautiful still do have problems.
First of all, from the novel we can see the corruption in the society and the characters, Daisy Buchanan is an example, despite her beauty and charm, Daisy is merely a selfish, shallow, and in fact, hurtful, woman. Although Fitzgerald carefully builds Daisy's character with associations of light, purity, and innocence, when all is said and done, she is the opposite from what she presents herself to be. Her final actions help show what she has been really made of. When she hits and kills Myrtle Wilson, and then leaves the scene making Gatsby take the blame for her, finally proving how corrupt she is.
Tom Buchannan is a corrupt man as well, he is a racist, sexist, hypocrite, arrogant, and a dishonest person as well. Yet he comes from a rich and socially stable family, this powerful status keeps other off his backs, and he is free to roam about with his outrageous views and ego. He cheats on his wife with another woman and isn’t ashamed about it
Another character in the novel attributing to the corruption of the people and society is Jay Gatsby, Jay Gatsby himself is living a corrupted life, his own name is not even real, and his fortune is from illegal bootlegging money. In a way Gatsby's entire life was corrupted by this entire image of picture perfect goal of a future with Daisy. However, he did achieve this lofty goal by participating in organized crime, including distributing illegal alcohol and trading in stolen securities.
Throughout the entire novel it is clearly portrayed that almost all the characters in the society were corrupt even Nick Carraway is a corrupt
